Steel leaders
« on: Dec 11, 2005, 01:11 PM »
for you pike guys out there using flouro leaders:  are you running that straight to the treble, or using a steel/titanium at the end?  Reasonings?

also - this site is great.  i'm obviously just starting to post, but have been reading for a couple weeks.  too bad not everybody's this cool out on the ice.

I always use either fireline for a leader, or 14 pound mono.  STeel leaders are a little to bulky.

I use straight fluoro of 15 - 30 pound test and had only one bite off all last year. Try ditching the wire and see how many more flags you get.

thanks guys, i did ditch the steel.  my buddies and i went out on tuesday, and my flag was the only one to stand up.  (does it matter that two were minnow trips? ;D)  ive been reading some other threads suggesting to just not bully the fish, and to finesse it.  let it run when it wants, and take time.  can't wait to get some real weight on the business end of the tip up.

Thanks again

6# Stren fluorocarbon and 8# Stren Maganthin mainline with Slammer Tip-Ups. EVERY pike I've ever caught off of a Slammer has been hooked in the corner of the mouth - so I switched to thinner line = MORE FISH
