Ice is on the way!!!
« on: Nov 27, 2005, 09:46 PM »
Well fellow SD'ers - ice is on the way!  After tomorrow it looks like we'll finally be getting some good ice making weather and I'm thining it'll be here to stay!  Hopefully we'll have safe walkable ice within the next week, although I know a few lakes/ponds/sloughs already have a few inches of iffy ice...

ICE ICE ICE!!!!

Sounded like you guys on the eastern side of the state really got hammered last night. A lot of trees and powerlines down. How did you make out WF? Not much here, just cold (10 F) and wind (45 MPH) and 2" of snow. The kids even had school today.
The wind is blowing hard enough that the dams I saw today are still wide open water.

WB - Last night just got rain.. I'm not sure how much, but it was a good little amount.  A little further west than Sioux Falls and they got freezing rain, which caused the power outages. Rain continued this morning and changed to sleet this AM probably around 10ish.  After about an hour of that it turned into a full blown blizzard.  Current visibility is low and temp round 20-30.  I'm sure the roads are just horrible.  I read part of I-90 is already closed.  It's snowing REALLY good and gusting probably 30-40.  Sounds like its supposed to keep up all day into the evening and quit sometime tonight with total accumulations of 4-8" across the SF metro area!!  Have to wait and see how much!  Will definitely be time to break out the snowblower or shovel at least!!!

IceJunky - we're supposed to be in for colder temps throughout the rest of the week!  Hopefully it'll stay cold and all will be well!  As soon as you find cold air up there, send it on down when you're done with it!!!!  ;D

South west ND couple smaller lakes still have a skim bigger lakes had ice but are now open, I was hoping to limp out in a week or so and see if it's good enough to fish on , should be after this cold snap we are going to get . I hope it sticks around this time.

Yesterday 11/28/05 Lake west of town was open water, 26 for a high 25 mph winds, got down to 14 overnight and iced over at lunch today, highs in the teens and 20's all week and lows around 0 , might be walking on water this weekend.

Did you check the guys sanity Shrek? Anybody fishing on 2 inches of ice is cetifiably insane. Sounds like it should be good by weekend with the temps predicted. Be safe and let us know how it goes.

I called around to GFP, the forest service, a couple resorts and a Baitshop up by Orman.  There's Ice but nothing safe yet with the exception of a few Stock Dams up by Belle Fourche.  I called the Forest service office in Hill City and they said the ice isn't safe on Sheridan yet but maybe next week.  I also called the Custer State Park office, they said Stockade just barely has ice on it.  I'm waiting to hear from Deerfield Resort.  I'm hoping that with Deerfield being so much higher in elevation they'll have safe Ice by now (I don't much care for trout anymore but Ice fishing is Ice fishin).  The guy at the Baitshop on 212 said Orman's waterlevel is rising fast so the Ice is not safe by any means but He said the stock ponds are probably safe.  Just get permission first.

Got a report  the ice on our honey hole is a good 4 - 5 " thats the good news , bad news was they fished all day and did not get a bite, stayed till dark. I'm guessing they were just in the wrong spot. More bad news wind is going to be out of the east, when fish bite the least . Think I'm checking it out any who. Taking the cans to keep my holes open and the shack to stay warm.

With the next week's temps, things should be good to go on many lakes in the area.  They are saying Tues. and Weds. of next week will be in the single digits.  Orman is a scary place one way or the other.  I haven't been out, but tomorrow I am going to see if there are any geese around and check to see if most of it is iced up. Water coming in is a given, but the past few years have been OK.  Edges are always scary.  Any wind also makes things interesting, I've been fishing on 10" of ice on one part of the lake, only to have a good wind blow open another portion that people were driving 4 wheelers on the weekend before.  I will only walk on ice there for sure.  Just have to use your head and be extra careful.  I'm hoping to hit some ice on some smaller lakes, maybe if things stay nice and cool we can get on relatively safe ice at Orman around/after Christmas.  Be safe out there!!!

oh man, PLEASE let me know as soon as you get back! I am hoping to get some Ice time in on Thursday and am dying to know how the ice ois doing! This weather will help a tonb paired with next week being in single digits till Thurs is great! Good luck with your geese and please please please report back as soon as you get back about the ice so I can schedule a day off! maybe 2 if the ice forms sooner than expected!  ;D ;D I have been dying for this to happen. Love the ice, hate the cold. Funny concept, huh? Keep the wind away and I can stand almost any temp :o

Well I just got back.  Orman is completely frozen, looks real good.  For once I think it may have frozen all as one, I couldn't pick out any spot that looked like it had blown open.  There could be some though, SO BE CAREFUL!!!!!!  I didn't get a chance to go down to the water, I found some geese on the ice and was only able to sit there for about 10 min. before they left and I went to follow them to their feed.  They were sitting on the ice, all sleeping, I got some good pics I think.  And as far as I followed them, I think they may be gone for good.  With the cold temps, Orman may well be fishable next weekend.  I don't know if I would take days off or not, maybe a bit too early.  Perhaps I will go out Tues. or so with the auger and see how things are.  BE SAFE OUT THERE!!!!!!!

Edit- Nodakbassmaster, shoot me an email!!!!!!

The Rapid City Journal had a pic of a guy ice fishing on deerfield lake today.  It appears that you can at least fish in the west bay.  Maybe I will try it next weekend after all of this cold weather, ice should be pretty good by then.

You have mail :o Sweet, that's a good start for my lake! I hopefully will have an idea of how thick the ice is today or tomorrow, if Lanny at 212 bait and tackle knows.  ???

Ice is Here!!!!  I just made a run up to Sheridan Lake to check the ice.  5+ inches at the HWY 385 access (Spring Creek inlet) and there 4 or 5 guys fishing out fishing about 30-40FOW.  I was going to check Deerfield but I figure if Sheridan has that much Deerfield is likely just as good or better (Depending on how much snow they got up there).  We're going up to Sheridan tomorrow.  Were going to set the tipups for Pike and probably jig for perch or crappie.  Tight Lines!!!
