Hey guys!  I was wondering if any of you had an idea where I could find a good, cheap pair of skis for a smitty sled??

Thrift Stores or classifieds websites.  I picked up 6 pairs of downhills for free on a local classifieds website  ;D.  Made an extra sled for a buddy too.

I have checked all the local thrift stores in my area but still can't seem to find any. If you stop at any, make sure to talk to a manager. I was told if they notice there are problems with them, they will hold them out back to throw away. So let them know it is not for use by a person but to build  a sled with them.

I needed to replace mine and put a post on facebook.....    Had three offers within an hour.

Lots of people have a pair of old skis laying around they don't need ….   or even want!

Stop by any ski store and ask if they have any old skis they don't want. If you tell them what your using them for you can probably get a pair for free - worked for me!

If you lived nearer to where my father lives, I'd tell ya to go see him! There are about 6 pairs of old skis in the rafters of his basement from when we kids were growing up skiing. I gave an old pair of mine to my buddy a couple years ago to use on his shanty.

Why no cross country?? I just built a sled using cross country. Seems like it will be fine but I haven't tried it yet.

Hey man My 2 cents get youth skis and make sure they are downhill skis they are wider and tend to float on top of the powdery stuff... As for finding them I heard somewhere that ski centers can't sell worn renta-skis so I would say try like one of the mountains around... Ask if they have some worn out rents skis they are going to toss good luck !!!!

Thinking of building a Smitty myself. I wonder if old water skis would work. Maybe the extra width would help floatation or just give more drag pulling.

Ok I got to ask, what does a smitty sled look like?
I'm assuming a homebuilt sled with ski's for carrying gear out on the ice.

Thanks for the info guys!  I wish our local Salvation Army was still around but they closed up a couple of years ago.   :(  I'm sure if I wasn't looking I would come across 12 pairs!
