Good Socks
« on: Jan 03, 2015, 02:44 PM »
My mom gave me a pair of J.B. Field's "Icelandic" socks for Christmas this year.  I had no experience with the company prior to this pair of socks but I have to say that I am very impressed with them.  I wore them on the ice yesterday and thought they performed excellently.  I wear them around the house and they are very warm.  I ordered up a couple more pairs.  Just thought I'd pass along the recommendation.

Thanks for the tip. I layer with polypropylene under a wool blend on the outside.
I might give these a whirl though.
Get outside.  It does a body and mind good!

I wear merino wool socks that I get at Fleet Farm. That's the softest, warmest wool there is. Costs more, but it's worth it. Make sure they're at least 80% merino wool.

Happens to be what I wear also.

Merino uppers and lowers is also what my base layer is under my ice suite. As Reb stated, "Costs more but worth it"  ;)2

My favorite is the Merino wool socks paired with a good moisture wicking base sock. I had this combo on once last year when I happened to put my foot down a 10 inch hole. needless to say my foot got wet but even wet the wool and base sock was able to keep my foot warm and I was able to fish that day instead of going home.

I agree with Reb, you can't beat merino wool, cheap at any cost. Feet are always warm.

My Son is an Army Ranger and swears by the following socks:
http://www.rangerjoes.com/Darn-Tough-ECW-Mid-Calf-Boot-Socks-P8842C410.aspx

When he went through Ranger school the guys wearing these never had problems.  Warm, no blisters, and didn't fall down. When he hears soldiers complain about their feet he tells them to try one pair and they become believers.  When I went to his Ranger graduation he took me shopping at a couple of military supply stores off base and suggested I try them.  I admit to balking at the price ($24) but he promised I wouldn't be sorry.  I broke down, bought 3 pairs, and now wear only these to work.  One of the best things about them is they don't seem to shrink in the dryer like most of the others I've tried. I've worn socks from Cabela's & Bass Pro that come with "Lifetime Warranties" and were supposed to be great (including Smartwool) but none of them hold a candle to these.  I don't work for the company but thought I'd pass it along FWIW.

Poly wicking sock, Merino wool outer.  Be sure to check the percentage of wool in the sock, some are only 20 or 30%.  sierratradingpost.com has several brands and weights, just do a search.

I am using Alpaca Survival Socks for ice fishing.  I am very happy with them, they are warm and keep your feet dry. Since I never used Marino wool I canno't compare them.

I've always had good luck with the Canada model by Wigwam.  Around $19 but last forever, super warm inside the Ice Kings.
Keep the front two between the snowbanks.

I liked smartwool until I met Darn Tough!

100% the BEST sock I have ever worn, and I have gone through them.
