How many fish?
« on: Jan 01, 2014, 12:39 PM »
Ok, now guys how many fish have you got in your freezer from last year? Remember a possession limit is how many you have in you possession. Now I am sure a lot of you, have fish in the freezer from last year. What do you do with them? Do not  waist those fish. 25 is a bag limit,50 is a possession limit,so if you have over 50 fish in your freezer you might be just breaking the law. I do not want to sound nasty about this. Just ask a ranger and see what he has to say. (Fat Fish)

Not anywhere close to my limit... mostly because there is no possession limit for inland waters here. But I still don't have 50 in the freezer.

Indiana recently changed their interpretation of "possession limit". Now any fish frozen, canned, preserved ect no longer counts in a possession limit, just un-processed fish...
This subject used to come up quite a bit.

Our possession limit now basicly only applies to traveling, or out-of-state hunters and fishermen who would have un-processed game/fish over a period of days.

Regulations differ from state to state.

Our creel limit is also our possession limit, but the fish cleaned and in our freezer don't count on our possession limit. The possession limit only counts when afield or in transit here.

I never keep a limit of fish, mainly because I don't want to clean that many. 12-14 Crappie is fine for me (our limit is 30 with a 9" minimum) and keeps me and the wife eating fish for a month or 2. I don't need to stock my freezer either because I'll go catch more when I eat all the ones I kept the last time.

I'll tell you what really pisses me off though. The non-resident "so called" fishermen that come here and take home several limits. Yes, you can catch and keep 30 Crappie per day... but it's illegal for a non-resident to cross the state line with more than one days limit and it is clearly written in our regulations.

First let me say I don't freeze fish . In Idaho there is no limit on the number of fish you can have in your home . Only in the field and transporting there .

I usually eat them within a week of catching them, with that being said, 2 or 3 eyes are in the freezer at this time.

Yeah, I think the only people that would get annoyed about a thread like this are the ones that are doing something they shouldn't be doing and don't like to be reminded about it.

I take it you don't have the mercury problems over there, like we do in the midwest? It is suggested we eat 1 meal per month on a lot of species, then 1 per week on bluegill.

I'm in the same state as CL89 so I'll answer. We've got several advisories on different waters for different species but nothing like you guys have to contend with.

To the OP; none, nada, zilch, zero. And the perch I brought home tonight were delicious!

Few lbs of halibut and half of a king salmon.

I never stock piled fish much, when I lived where fish were edible through the ice, I'd usually have a decent stash on hand.  Mostly for a fish fry now and then.  The wife and I usually at all of our fish fresh.

he is right not any really like you guys..... most of the lakes I fish don't have warnings on the fish I eat most of the warnings are on trout.... I guess I should quit complaining about the fishing here if you are recommended to only eat one meal a month.....

A ton!! well 30 pounds anyways.  It's all bait though.  I catch cisco (no limit) and freeze them whole for Pike bait.  It's not too hard to catch 100 or more a day, so I go out once or twice a year to catch "bait sized" ones and then use them up as the season progresses and sometimes even in the soft water season.  I'll go through 25 or more on a half decent Pike trip.

Otherwise, eating fish... maybe 2 pounds of Walleye from last weekend and those will be eaten this weekend and replaced with tomorrows catch.

One bag of trout from this summer, and they are going to disappear soon...sometimes ill find fish I forgot about in the bottom of the freezer but most times I eat them the day I bring them home, fresh fish tastes so much better...any I do freeze and forget about that get freezer burnt beyond edibility  get turned into coyote/crow bait or ill leave take em with me and then leave em on the ice for the eagles and foxes when I leave
Theres only 3 seasons..open water, hunting and icefishing!

A few bags of gills and crappie. I monitor how much is in the freezer. If I have enough for a fish fry, I start becoming real selective with what I keep or throw everything back.

How much hamburger do you have in your freezer?   What's the difference? There is no limit on pan fish where I live.  If you eat fish once a week or even every two or three weeks, who's business is it anyway.

I still have one small bag left from fall fishing, then I can start out fresh. I don't like to keep fish in the freezer more than a couple months normally. When I have a fish fry and my 2 daughters and boy friend come over I better have plenty of fish they can really put it away, our family loves eating fish. We eat as much fresh fish as possible before I will freeze them.
