First fish with a marcum and a question
« on: Dec 09, 2007, 08:09 PM »
well, i got out on the ice in the UP this weekend and managed to get my first fish with a marcum, a small perch.  the marcum makes fishing so much more fun and not as random. its awesome. But i have a question, once you guys see the fish rise up to your jig tipped with a minnow or waxworm and is right on top of it, what do you do with your jig? Do you jiggle it a little? Do you pump it up and down? Or do you just keep it still?  Or does it depend on the situation? Thanks.

If they will keep coming as you raise it, keep it going until they decide they wont go any farther. The distance they travel will change from day to day, but the general rule is keep doing what you were doing to get them interested in the first place. In most cases, you don't want to change your presentation just because you see a fish on the flasher. Ive had perch come up 4 to 5 feet before they would decide to eat or head back to the bottom. Just try to keep it within "tasting" distance just off the tips of their snouts. A slow game of keep away.
May ol man winter blow a cool breeze up your shorts!

You interested them enough to come up to your bait, don't change what you are doing.

depends on the fish
The fishing is always great, the catching however, always isn't

I usually lift my jig above the fish when it first moves in and if the fish follows it up that tells me that the fish is a little aggressive and 9 times out of ten he will hit.  If he stays, lower the jig back down easy and twitch the jig slightly and leave it sit, he will either take it or leave.
