Chains or not
« on: Jan 06, 2014, 07:43 PM »
What is your opinion.

I have an atc with pretty good tires.
I have a set of chains on the back tires.
Does it make any difference in the snow, hard back and drifts?

Thanks, Doug
See ya on the ice,

I found they made a big difference in most all snow types when I had my quad. They act a bit like paddles in the deeper softer stuff, and bite into the bare ice for more grip when the lake is windswept.
A bad day of fishing beats anything else I'd be doing today.....

I have noticed many claim to not need them. I can say I would feel very handicapped not having them on. The last thing I do before hitting the lake for the first time is to hang iron. I leave the chains on until my last outting of the season. Pretty cheap insurance when a little extra traction is needed.

When you need chains, you NEED chains.  Why take the chance of getting stranded in what could be life threatening conditions?

Fishing simcoe last winter with my ATV taught me a lesson.  We left before sun up, cruising through about 3 inches of powdery snow on top of very slippery ice.  By noon we were pushing the quads though the almost 2 feet of snow that Nemo dumped on us.  The snow would just build up in front of the machine.  It took HOURS of pushing 5 quads 20-30 yards at a time, going back to get the shanties that the quads would no longer pull, and then digging the snow out to get going again.  Guys with chains drove right by us.

Are you sure its because of the chains and not that CAN-AM POWER? ;D

I had chains on this Sunday and was busting through the snow drifts with very little effort, without them I may of been digging out.

If your tires have deep tread, do the chains not get stuck between the big knobs of the tires? I want to get some, but I don't think they would be in contact with much bcs of the deep tread. Any insight is appreciated. Thanks.

When you get chains, get either the "2 link" or diamond cross ones.  4 link chains are too far apart.  Check here and see for yourself.
