We're all Sportsmen quick read about Burlington
« on: Dec 12, 2013, 10:11 AM »
I know this is a fishing forum but I think most of or not all of us are sportsmen and this is worth a read.

http://www.foxnews.com/politics/2013/12/12/vermont-city-may-use-loophole-to-push-gun-control-in-2014/

I think Burlington has seen the end of my business.

The proposal that passed would ban firearms from bars, allow police to take and hold weapons for 5 days from people involved in domestic disputes, and require weapons to be secured while unattended. While I am a gun owner with an ffl and love shooting and having the right to have what I want to protect myself, I think saying that Burlington is going to lose your business over attempting to confiscate guns from people involved in domestic disputes for 5 days is sorta crazy... The cops should have every right to take the guns out of a house in that situation... I find it hard to find a valid reason why a wife beater should have access to his guns during any sort of investigation into the incident for which the police were called. I also think people + guns + bars = bad idea. That said any sort of assault weapon ban like was proposed and shot down almost unanimously last year would be something to fight about... It pays to research issues before becoming outraged by foxnews half stories though.

keith,
while i agree to a point,
wont argue with requiring firearms to be locked, that should be common sense,
although should have a provision for unlocked firearms while one is home for security,
for the domestic dispute issue,
they will be confiscating firearms from suspects of domestic disputes,
means they will be confiscating firearms before anyone is found guilty of anything,
what if a spouse needs a firearm for protection?
by confiscating firearms you could be disarming a potential victim.
what qualifies as domestic dispute? any heated argument?
a nasty neighbor or spouse can call cops for a domestic dispute on a whim whenever they feel like it.

Never once did I say I was outraged, that was a bit of a jump don't you think?  Just b/c I don't want to support a town that is full of knee jerk reaction liberals?  We got a call from your neighbor saying they heard some yelling, we need your guns.  Does that make any sense to you keith?

Well the key is the suspected abuse... It does not require every domestic to have guns taken, and it is only for five days while investigating, so the neighbor issue isn't all that concerning, ntm I have never had the issue where I was screaming at my fiancé loud enough that the cops got called by the neighbors. The board shot down nearly unanimously a proposal to require carry permits, and didn't even bring up the awb that one person had proposed... That shows them being far from knee jerk. I would say taking guns out of the homes of abusers would be common sense. I just can't stand up for the right of a wife beater to have access to his guns... Might just be me, but I bet I am in line with vast majority of populous on this issue.

Keith I actually do agree with you.  I am a gun owner and frown upon anyone trying to infringe on our rights of gun ownership, but like you said there are people out there that should not own firearms.  I don't know if making a blanket law saying someone can confiscate your firearms on suspicion of something is the right way to go about it.  I actually don't know if there is a right way to go about it.  Most of the dirt bag type of people your concerned with have felony's on their records and aren't suppose to have firearms in the first place.

What scares me about things like this, little laws like this being passed is it opens the door for others.  It paves the way for the next one to be passed easier.

Hi all,

We are indeed all sportsmen and while I agree that this is an important topic to discuss, this is not the forum for it (we do have one, though!)

As per the sticky on the top of this page, I ask that you bring this up on our sister site: http://www.myhuntingforum.com/

Shutting this one down.

Tight lines,

Wes
