My buddy and I went north of Newaygo on Saturday morning to take advantage of this early ice. The ice was not good on the first lake (Nichols) we went to so we hit a smaller, shallower lake. The ice seemed very good in parts and not so good in other parts. After drilling several holes and setting 2 tip-ups, my buddy went through the ice in 12' of water - Up to his chest ! ! ! ! Fortunately, he was able to get out quickly. We always wear life-jackets on early and late ice. I think this helped a lot ! ! ! Very scary situation - And a very nervous walk off the ice . . . Our shortest fishing trip ever ! ! !
Be safe ! ! !
