where is the safe ice?
« on: Nov 28, 2013, 07:34 PM »
Have almost 5 inches of ice on my pond out back, going to take a drive tomorrow and check some early ice spots around home. (Near wrightstown)  anyone have any suggestions?  Have everything ready to go, just need some ice other than the pond! Tightlines and be safe out there!

I walked out on Lake Hallie today between Eau Claire and Chippewa Fall there is about 3" of ice. I'm thinking about going tomorrow if I can get some to go along.

Send me a PM if you are going out.  I'm gonna head out somewhere today.  Not sure where yet though.

ok, skipper bud's has 4 to 5 inches of good ice around the boat slips. didn't go out past the slips, a dozen or so fisherman out.  jigged for alittle while with some gulp waxy's and couldn't raise a bite but watched some other guys pull in some very decent gills, slow going though.   Drove out to asylum bay, a little thin along the shore (2 1/2 TO 3 first 10 yards) but a good 4-5 inches further out. some guys were acouple hundred yards off shore. there were a couple dozen fisherman spread out while I was there. was just checking so only ventured out about 50yards, popped a hole every 25 ft or so, pretty consistent ice. (gotta watch yourself on asylum with all the springs in there) will probably hit both places tomorrow am.  literally a month earlier than normal around here, I am not complaining! tightlines and if you go out BE SAFE.

I fished the back waters of the ol' Mis near Alma again today, about 3 1/2" where I was. Very tough bite, seemed like they wanted the jig almost still. Water was cloudy and I had a hard time even marking any fish.
Be CAREFUL if you go to Hallie, there are springs in the lake...

Have to agree with Hardcharger07 found 4 to 5 inches in the same places you were. Had a nice bucket today but they didn't come easy. Stay safe.

fished asylum bay this afternoon. (little too much fun last nite to make the "a.m. bite")  caught one 8" gill, jig n spike in about 4 1/2 ft..  talked to another fella that had 18 perch on minnows.... might try some minnows tomorrow morning. ice still decent but the 38 degree weather today did not help. will see how conditions are tomorrow. was out about 400 yards, tomorrow I will try in alittle closer. (anyone know what depth they have been holding at?)  was quite afew people out today couldn't really tell if anyone was catching any fish. be safe out there!!!

went out to asylum bay this afternoon.  fished for 4 hours and brought home 15 perch and gills.  largest perch was 10.5, largest gill was 9 very nice gill.  not too many dinks but a lot of 4 to 5 inch walleyes.  ice is still good even after this warmer weather.  will be going back out tomorrow morning. tightlines and be safe!!!

Good job nice to hear a good report out of Asylum. Did the perch come on minnows? I was on a good gill bite very shallow on the upper lakes but the lack of snow cover shut it down for now. Biggest gill from the weekend 9 7\8". I set a goal a few years back to catch a 10"er but its proved harder than I thought. Unicorns.

Ice here in the La Crosse area is coming along nicely.  Made it out a few hours both Saturday and Sunday. Fish weren't jumping out of the water but did manage a few jumbos. Had 3-4 inches pretty consistently. With the cold temps starting Thursday we should have great ice this weekend!

KK, that 10 incher is out there.... somewhere.... over the rainbow?? hanging by a weedline close to a drop off.... :)  let me know when you wrangle one of those up!!! I was using wax worms and spikes... was varying it. punched about 15 holes and just started dropping the flasher down each one til I marked fish.  would jig with one rod catch one or two then they would get stiff lipped again, switch to a different rod with a different jig and bait and bang pick another one or two up.  (meant to get minnows but somehow drove all the way without remembering to stop for them) GPS's the spot in and will try again in the a.m.

back out on asylum today.  crappy crappy weather!!  ice is still decent but not sure how much more of this it will beable to take. colder temps need to hurry up.  (all this freezing rain and snow is not going to help either)  Very very slow today, still managed to bring home 5 gills and 8 perch.  not as big as yesterday and more dinks mixed in today. once again, 4.7 ft of water, spikes and waxies.  black, white and red jigs seem to work best.  (nothing on green, yellow and such)  kept mixing it up again between white and red spikes and waxies.  slow slow light bite.... if it weren't for the showdown I would have been hard pressed to catch anything.
