Auger Maintenance - Omaha
« on: Dec 07, 2013, 09:03 AM »
Anybody know of a good place to take my Ice Auger too around Omaha.  Can get auger started, but will cut out.  I have extinguished my knowledge of small engines and would just like to take it to a professional to get it cleaned and tuned up.  Thanks for any help.

Just needs carb cleaned I'm sure. I have to make gas run today to find non ethanol. Won't run it in my small engines as they can sit for longer times.  I believe  it gums up faster.

I think the "Mower Doctor" in downtown Papillion works on most brands of ice augers. (402) 596-0824
I don't have a gas auger, so I haven't used his services for augers, but I have for mowers and I believe that when I was in his shop he had some auger stuff...

Try new gas mixed with some seafoam mixed in and a new plug.

Thanks for the suggestion guys.  I always empty out the gas at the end of the season and put some marine stabil in and run it a bit before I put it away for the spring.  I can drill a hole with it, but after I let off the throttle, it dies.  I've adjusted everything I can and cleaned it up the best I can.  Just don't know anymore to do with it.  That's why I was asking for a small engine place to have them look at it.  Appreciate the feedback.

What brand auger do you have?  Is it a Tecumseh Strike Master?

If you had a Strike Master with Tecumseh I was going to ask what your mix ratio is.  If you are mixing richer than 40:1 you might consider remixing some gas 40:1 or 50:1 or one of the synthetics mixes.  It fixed mine going 40:1 it had the same symptoms as yours and I put a new carburetor kit and that didn't improve it until I remixed fuel ratio.

I have a Strikemaster Lazer Mag with a Tecumseh 2 HP motor, a few years ago I couldn't get it started in the fall after sitting most of the summer.
After doing quite a lot of research this is what was recommended from Strikemaster.

Always start with fresh gas and use 91 octane bought after December 1st so it is the winter blend.
Mix at a ratio 50-1 with a high quality low smoke 2 cycle oil.
Use a hotter plug.    #CJ8Y
Use Stabil gas treatment and always start and run a few minutes about once a month in the off season. Running it will not only make the motor start easier but will lubricate the gaskets in the engine and keep them from drying out and cracking.

I have followed these recommendations and have not had a problem since. I do believe Tecumseh has eliminated the small engine line due to the Federal Emission Standards and the Strikemaster augers are now equipped with Solo motors.

Hope this helps.             LP

I use several different Amsoil synthetics in all of my 2 cycle engines from my small ice auger engine all the way up through several 154 Horsepower snowmobiles and feel that due to using it, everything starts and runs easier and doesn't foul out the plugs due to burning cleaner.  It is cheap to use and goes a long ways since it doesn't take much fuel to run an ice auger.  I can get you info. on it if you are interested.   Happy trails.

Ice Doc,

Try running Seafoam in it....

It worked on my Jiffy, ran like crap they wanted 85.00 to tune it up and it was going to take 3 weeks.. Bought a can of Seafoam and ran it for 15 mins full throttle and it ran like a champ after that!

Just a suggestion

I appreciate all the little tips and hints you guys have given me.  Sorry to hear that Rippin, but it happens to the best of us.  I think I got it working okay right now.  Going to try some of the stuff you guys talked about.  I'm pretty sure the carburetor just needs a good clean out.  Thanks again.

Glad you got it going!

If you use the seafoam, just put about 1/4 of the bottle per gallon of gas. The auger will smoke a bit..or a lot. That is ok.

Always treat your gas with stabil and run seafoam through it every year.  Your motors/small engines will not give you problems.
