Smitty sled design help
« on: Mar 21, 2013, 12:17 AM »
I have a jet sled Jr that I was hauling my gear with which was not very organized.  So I decided to build a wooden box to fit in the sled, to hold all of my gear in and to have the auger mount on top of the box.  I saw something similar on this site. The box is a bit heavy but OK, but the problem is that I think it is too tall and narrow, it tips side to side.  It looks like Smitty sleds are the way to go.  I can make it wider and have the auger next to the box to help with the height issue.  I like how many have made theirs on skies and want to do the same.  It looks like 2x6 or 2x8 are used to mount to the skies.  How is this done?  Bolted or screwed?  Is wider the way to go?

Wider is the key for stability, I have used a 2x6 sideways ( about 6"long  ) and screwed the skies to it, the wood snap in half.
Then I changed to metal, an old bed frame.

My Father in-inlaw just made one for me and he was able to avoid the bolts on the 2x4 cross braces. I will post a picture when I get home tonight.  He just added a piece of wood under neath the 2x4 and it fits into the notches in the 2x6.  I would like to thank everyone who has contributed to this thread.  My new sled is simply awesome.  If you do not have one of these yet, make one.

What I did just this past week to my new Eskimo 1 man was to buy some Shapell 3000 series skis and mount them between the hyfax that I mounted on the bottom of the sled. When the skis  fold down they are below the hyfax and when up they bring the sled about 3 inches above them, keeping the sled above the snow. I'd post pictures but its a chore.

Great idea. How are they holding up with all the weight?

They work real nice so far. With the bend of the front ski it really tightened the plastic.
