Tow Bar
« on: Nov 15, 2006, 07:25 AM »
Does anyone have plans on making a tow bar for a jet sled that cheaper to make then $24.95? I will be connecting to a 4 wheeler. I have done a search and found that some pvc pipe on the rope would work but I'm thinking of something a little stronger. Can anyone help? Thanks.

Here is one on Amazon for $20. I bought mine for $16.99 locally, by the time you buy all the items you need to build one you may find one just as cheap. Good luck.

I took two 4 foot lengths of 1" metal conduit and flattened one end in a vice and then flattened the other end 90 degrees from the first.  I drilled out two holes in each end and bolted the two pieces together, and on the other end I bolted a spring clip like you find on a dog leash.  I don't think I have $5-$10 in the entire thing.

I've got the same one for the snowmoblie up at camp for my Jet sled.
But, a home made one would me nice too, make it longer the standard size.
My poles are bend and I think a little more length would help out.  ;) And probable better to have it longer being pulled behind a 4 wheeler.  8)

Unless you have a welder ;)

I do have a welder I like the idea of the conduit but I wish I had a pic. I don't understand the part about the spring clip like on a dog leash. I know a few people have made the on the site. I did find one but the pic was  x out. So I'm still looking for help.

Conduit is not good to work with, the galvanization on it is terrible stuff. Try 1'' square tube. If you have a welder and you are good with it, a tow bar shouldn't be too complicated to put together. ;)

Build it to suit yourself, to work best with your application. Make a custom job and post us some pics. :)

I just made mine myself with some extra junk laying around. Bent some tubing into a big U and welded a little thing so it stayed on the hitch

I saw one made out of a couple of old lawn mower handles. Cheap (looked it too).

I just built one from 1/2" conduit.  I spent about $4 for 2 10' pieces, and about $12 for the other stuff.
I made a "V" out of 2 5' pieces.  I flattened the ends down using a vise and a hammer.  I drilled holes in the
"bottom of the V" section, bolted it together.  I flattenend the "top of the V" ends, and drilled a 5/8" hole in
it as well as the other end.  I put small (1/4") shackles at all ends an am ready to go.  I made a small cross
brace but need to make some more measurements when I am near my shack again.  It took me about 20 minutes.  It should last at least 2-3 seasons.  I didn't want to fire up the welder in the basement, especially with galvi.

I should also say I own two of the commercial hitches.  I have bent one pretty good, but they work well for me and my two jet sleds and snowmobiles.  I needed something a bit different for my shack I built this fall.
Cheers,
MD.

Go to clam corp and look at their towbar. Not complicated,
1-10 pc 3/4 conduit or 3/4 pipe 2-5'pcs---2 rails
1-3ft x1 in flat stock 1/8 in--- cross brace
 1-1 ftx1inx1/8 flat stock---tongue brace
2- brake springs or 3 in long, heavy  compression springs
 1-  3/8x 6 inch bolt ,nut
 4-3/8 in fender washers
6-1/4 inx 1-1/2 in bolts, nuts, lockwashers

Round this stuff up then look at a picture and make it. Makes for a good weekend chore. !!Like they said, cost is about the same whether you buy it or make it, just makin it you can beef it up. Need a pic of one, send me your e-mail address and I can send you a couple pics of mine. I looked at one a gander mtn, then made one , works fine, just have to put c-brackets on sled or make eyelets !!          Mike

An x-brace from staging:
cuttable w/sawzall
drillable
boltable
maybe bendable for goosenecking
buy spare cheap ball receiver at auto parts store/ car accesory shop in size you need

The employment of effort, hard work, time, and energy put in locating fish will offend noone.

I put 2 eye-bolts on my scout, use a old lawn mower handle with long bolts aimed away from each other. Squeeze the end together and thru the eyebolts.  Easily removed for when I'm walking and want a rope-pull and use snap-clips. Cheap and simple

here are some pic's of my sled , the towbar is 3/4" EMT conduit, bent with a borrowed bender, with a slight gooseneck to keep the hitch end from rubbing or freezing in. sorry the pic's are dark, I just took them for bragging, not design or layout  :embarassed:  ;)   rh

i'm making a sort of ice go kart thing and for the hitch bar to my jet sled jr, i just bent a piece of aluminum piping in a V and put 2 clevis to swivel at the bottom of the v. good flexability for turns and still strong
