Is it true that a 16 ft boat does not have to be titled in minnesota? Lookin at buying a 16ft aluminum boat there and this is what the owner tells me.

There is a little known catch to all this.  If you only use your boat for duck huting, it does not have to be licensed in MN.  Weird huh?  MN not collecting a fee on something.

Isn't that restricted to under 10hp too?

The title is an age thing. If the boat is old enough, one isn't needed. My 14 ft Mirrocraft hull was manufactured in 1965, it has no title, hull id, or coast guard placard. It's all legal because of it's age. All I have is the assigned number from the DNR.

True. From the Minnesota 2013 Boating Guide:

If your boat matches any of the descriptions below, it DOES NOT need to be titled. My boat:

 Is registered in another state and is never used in Minnesota for over 90 days at a
time.
 Was manufactured before August 1, 1979.
 Is 16 feet or less in length.
 Is a rowboat with oar locks and an outboard motor rating of less than 40 HP.
 Is a canoe, kayak, ship’s lifeboat or
seaplane.
 Is a documented vessel (documentation is a process where official papers are issued
by the Coast Guard on boats of 5 net tons
or larger).
 Is owned by a manufacturer or dealer and is held for sale.
 Is used by a manufacturer for testing
purposes only.
 Is a duck boat used only in season for duck hunting.
 Is a rice boat used only in season for ricing.
 Is owned by a resort or recreational
camping area which is licensed by
the Minnesota Department of Health.
 Is a rowing shell or scull (not an ordinary
rowboat).
 Is owned by the United States, a state, this state, or a political subdivision.
 Was not previously issued a title from
another jurisdiction.

If you didn’t check off any of the above conditions, you do need to title your boat.
If you need to title your boat, or aren’t sure if it needs to be titled, contact any deputy registrar of motor vehicles office or the Department of Natural Resources License Center for more information.

Don't confuse Titled with Registered. There is a difference.  :)

Thanks for the replies, the reason I ask is that I intend on taking the 40 hp motor off of the boat and putting a 25 hp that I already own on it and sell in montana. In MT it needs to be titled so I just wanted to have all my ducks in a row before I put it up for sale. In other words Ill have to let interested buyers know that they will have to title it as I do not plan on putting it in the water.

Thanks again

I agree with Rebelss.
I have a rebel Mr. pike 16 foot and it has to be Registered/ licensed to be used, but Titleing was an option.
( I titled it only because the previous owner did also)
