New floor for clam 2000
« on: Sep 19, 2005, 02:14 PM »
I am very disappointed with my clam 2000 floor.  I have had it two seasons now and i have cracks all over the place and the areas where the floor opens for holes is all busted.  I have been very carefull when using it but i am sick of always treating it like a baby.  SO for this season i would like to build a base out tof plywood and then have wooden runners.  I know that the base would no longer fold up but i dont need it to.  So my question is what thickness of plywood should i use? Is it better to have thicker floor with less runners or more runners thinner floor?  Weight is some what of an issue since i will be pulling the shack my self.  Any comments would be great.

If your gonna use plywood i would go with 5/8. You could probably fix your original floor with some fiberglass and resin if you know how to do that stuff.

I thought about using some sort of repair solvent, but i think that the base will continue to crack in new spots.  I was aiming for 5/8" for the floor.  Now does the floor need to be sealed, say with underbody paint or something similiar? Now for the runners has anybody used that new deck material that they have out there?  Not sure what the official name is for the stuff, all i know is that is some sort of plastic.  I was thinking about cutting a 2x6" in half and using that for runners so then they would be about 2x3".  The shack is about 4' across so i was going to put a runner every 6" or so. Any more ideas are welcome.

You could just use watersealer or paint the floor.

the floor held up the first year and now it has been a season or two since it started cracking so i don't think that they would honor the warranty.  I really like the shack size and the material for the tent, just not the base.  I am off today so i think a stop at the home depot for some brain storming would be good.

One thing I have learned is that Clam has top notch customer service.  If you have a complaint they are very quick to fix the problem and usually give you no hassle over it.

well i just called clam and they are sending a new base at no charge.  I guess that they have had a few calls on the bases for the clam 2000 and i guess that a few bases that where manufactured where not the best.  So my new base should be here soon.  Like everyone said great service, very understanding and helpfull.  Well i guess that solves my base issue, once again iceshanty.com to the rescue and the Clam Corp with another home run in the world of ice fishing!!!!!!
Thanks again for everones help.

A Friend of mine got a complete replacement of his Clam last year, no charge. All because of the floor cracking.

Clam, the ONLY way to go. Customer satisfaction still means allot. I wish Strikemaster would listen & learn.
