rattletrap for pike?
« on: Feb 27, 2013, 01:10 PM »
i have heard all the these people saying that they use reattletraps all the time for pike, but i went to a class a little while back and the host said that the rattletrap os his last resort for pike. he said that if you put it on it can scare away the pike or anything else in the are within 100 feet. i tried one that i bought a few times and did not even have anything come in. is it better to jig it aggressively or to do small jigs and barely rattle it?? thanks for any info.

I have caught pike on them, jigging like crazy. Put a minnow head on it.

If I was smart enough I would post a pic and show u some pike I've caught on rattlebaits. I was a non believer for a while but one day I was jigging a rapala clicking rap and set the rod down to go get a flag. When I came back there was a 32 inch pike running with the lure! Since then I have been using em to call and catch pike, so give it some time and try it  ;D

His last resport, my first!  I rip them infront of a camera 90% of the time when using them, and they definitely call in all different species of fish.  Sometimes they cruise in and watch it before striking or swimming away.  Other times the fish come out of nowhere and simply smash it.  Start out aggressive and work your way down to a more subtle presentation.  Fishes moods differ.  You just need to figure what mood they are in and present accordingly.

Check out the In-Fisherman website and take a look at some of the articles under the "PIKE & MUSKY" and "ICE FISHING" sections.  Some solid information on jigging northerns there.

For me Lindy Darters have been gold. The rattles make a big difference.

They work well for me too but they are not as durable as the old rattle traps.
I've had a couple split on me right down the seam.   :'(

I've used rattle traps to bring in pike while spearing an have seen numerous other fish come in to investigate.

Most of mine are in the 1/2oz range.  Honestly I don't have any rattle traps.  I have many Darters, Clackin Raps, Rippin Shads, Rippin Raps, LiveTarget Goldshiners etc. though.

If I could only use one rattle bait, it would be the LT Goldshiner.
