I love the conversation going on here. I would love to see the daily bag limits of pan-fish reduced again. As responsible anglers, we must educate children to take it upon themselves to take less fish and stick to the rules. Unfortunately, I think it's to late to educate some of the seasoned fishermen. They have been taught to keep as many fish as possible. I think it's a sense of pride to get that picture of a pile of fish. I think some people just can't leave a lake without saying "I caught my limit." The biggest problem we have is not the anglers that fish occasionally, it's the anglers that fish more than once a week and fill their freezers.

exactly!!!! i wanna say i got my limit then some every time out but i dont have to keep em and show off pics to feel proud. and yeah its the real fisherman(some of them) that cause the biggest problem pertaining to possesion limits/limits....average joe's lucky to catch some let alone a limit....

sometimes fisherman are their worst enemies,, there is a recent forum that asks "show us your pictures from your fishing trips.'..imo that is just advertising to promote this very problem..being from Colorado I have seen our elks herds dwindle because of DOW states "come to Colorado because we have the largest elk herd" . About 5 years ago one hunter could take 3-4 elk on a A, B, C, and sometimes on a D license. Well those days are no longer throw a winterkill on top of a overkill and you ended with fewer elk and I as a resident not able to draw a muzzleloading icense in 3 years cause numbers are down. so I have to fill my freezer with your fish..lol,, just kidding,, I'd rather catch then eat.

There is a certain pride in being able to catch and release. I was fishing a local lake last weekend. When i flipped up my shanty, there were several people fishing. One guy asks what i had caught. i told him I had caught several limits of panfish. He wanted to see them. I told him I had thrown them all back! I wish i had a picture of the shocked look on his face! He showed me his bucket of fish, several dinky bulegill. Probably barely a bite of meat per side of fish. Whats the point? I mean i get the point, but jeez, give the little guy's time to grow!

Wow, great reads and all the truth, I would like to add, but I don't  see anything that hasn't already been said other than fishing needs to be more social than thinking that you need to take your limit ,home several times a week. Like I say of myself, if I had to sustain life or make a living off of fishing, I would most likely be broke and hungry, heck I just like being out there with family and friends, that is what is all about for me. Some of the greatest people I have met and know I met on the ice.

The word at the bait shop is the rancher is shutting off access at the end of the ice season. Trash, people driving off the trail, signs run over...... That didn't take long...... Anybody else hearing the same???

Haven't heard anything about it but wouldn't surprise me one bit. Exact reason why private landowners in this state don't allow more access to hunting & fishing.

Round Lake North of Whitman is closed again because of slobs.

Not to mention the publicity the lake has got in the paper and these forums.

I really haven't seen much trash or anyone going off trail (other than to let someone pass). I really thought for the most part that people were doing a good job. Hope this is not true.  >:(

People are not going a good job. I have been up there only twice this year and both times picked up a bucket of trash and watched people drinking as well. There have been way to many people for my taste to fish it has looked like a small town both times I went.

Game and Parks doesn't always help the resource, either.  This article was published in December, 2011 complete with topo maps:

http://outdoornebraska.ne.gov/blogs/2011/12/crescent-blue/

Only took a year to trash a great fishery.....look at the comments of the article and there were supposedly 100 folks fishing Blue in very short order.  Good for selling licenses (if there was enforcement), not so good for PR with private land holders for either NGPC nor ethical sportspeople.

Should require Park stickers to access Open Fields and Waters areas in my opinion, with enforcement.

I  am not surprised.  I have only fished Blue Lake on one occasion this winter. Early the afternoon we were fishing a NE Game warden was checking everyone on the ice making sure everyone had licenses, etc.   Great guy and glad he came out on the ice. Any way he shared with us that people were not staying in the two lane track but instead shifting their driving path 2 feet either side of the two tracks to seek a smoother trail or to get out of the deep rutts.  When this is done the vehicle traffic kills the grass that is driven over which is in violation to the lease. When this occurs the Game Commission has no choice but to lock the trail gate and stop all vehicular traffic.  People think they are staying on the trail by driving several feet outside of the ruts- Wrong choice and one of the reasons he felt the trail would be closed early this year to put a stop to the  grass damage.  You must stay in the two ruts the entire time and if that means driving less than 5 mph so be it.  Two wheel drive vehicles could also attempt to drive on the trail but because of their low clearance, had to drive outside of the rut- Again another reason the grass was being driven on.

Last year the Game Commission had to haul in dirt / sand to repair trail ruts.  That is an expensive proposition I am sure. Hence it is better to close the trail than let the trail be totally torn up as the frost goes out.

I guess I did pick up a little trash myself on the ice one day. The trail situation is something that was inevitable. I am a rancher and know that over time certain parts of the trail are going to get deep ruts. Every so often you must slide over to one side or the other and start over. If the rancher or the game and parks really thought that this road would hold up to all that traffic, even with people driving nicely and in four wheel drive, then they really weren't thinking well or were ignorant. Doc - why did you go back the 2nd time if there were too many people for your taste the first time? Not wanting to pick a fight, just really curious. I'm really glad that we have people that are willing to pick up after the slobs. Maybe we can work together to keep this lake available.

I thought the road looked fine, and I didnt see any trash at all, going up on a weekday to avoid the cluster is the way to do it.  Sounds like a bunch of whining to me.

I was there this week, drove out for the day. The trail is rutted badly, beat me to death. As for the fishing, its a great fishery, but as everyone has stated, it's up to us the fishermen to protect it. I did keep a limit of fish, but released as many as I kept, even some larger fish. May I add, I'm new to NE and ice fishing. This season has been good for me!  I've caught bass, walleye, catfish, bluegills and perch. I even iced a large carp, LOL!  If the ice holds up, I hope to catch some crappies and a pike or two. Not bad for a newbee, huh!

If you love what you do, you will take care of it! It's up to you.

Nah, Game & Parks doesn't help the resource.

Did you know that neither Crescent nor Blue would be open to fishing if it were not for the Game & Parks?  And that Game & Parks renovated and re-stocked both lakes?

So we should do that and then let only a few of you know about it?  Everyone's fishing permit dollars were used to develop those fisheries and Nebraska anglers should know about it.

By the way, the money from Park Stickers goes strictly for our state park and state recreation areas; not a dime of that money goes for fisheries management nor does a dime of your fishing permit money go to the state parks.  It cannot.

And I will say again, if you see problems with violations, find the numbers for the conservation officers, you can find them all here, http://www.outdoornebraska.ne.gov/fishing/guides/fishguide/pdf/FishGuide.pdf, call 'em and keep calling 'em.  When you cannot get in contact with them or think that they are doing nothing, call 'em again!

I guess I don't understand how people screwed it up Doc allot of people went fishing and drove down a sand trail and it left a deep track this is going to happen any where in the sandhills with that much traffic.  I understand the reason for the article but this is the price we pay for advertising.   I live forty minutes from Blue and went 4 times this season.  The talk is there going to fix the trails with wood chips and everything will be fine again.  Maybe everyone will forget about old Blue lake lol.......

I guess I should have clarified a little better the trail you could do nothing about (if you had a 4 wheel drive which is required) but I was there twice and picked up a bucket of trash and beer cans both times. It's one thing to go in with a 4 wheel drive which is required but I know some people that live in Ogallala drive up in a 2 wheel drive and when they start to get stuck spin the crap out of there wheels to make the trail even worse. Some one had also started a fire out on the ice which I believe is not permitted correct me if I am wrong.

I talk with South Dakota Joe (sorry, didn't get his last name) from the Alliance G&P office this evening. He said they closed Cottonwood/Steverson and Blue Lake. Blue was closed because the frost is going out and ruts will get worse with vehicles traveling over them right now. They are trying to keep the landowner happy for future public access there. Probably be posted tomorrow because he was just getting back to Alliance from a field O2 test about quitting time when I talked to him.

Thank you game and parks.  I've fished blue twice this year with a friend.  We left with 12 nice perch apiece.  Fishing was great!!  I think the people who want to have a lake to themselves should buy one, stock it, and lock the gate.  I'm thankful for all game and parks do for us in this state.
