How big is to big for an 8in hole?
« on: Jan 26, 2013, 09:45 AM »
Going out sunday, wanna try for some lake trout before moving in for ling.  Don't really want to cut a clover leaf if I don't have to.  So I was curious of what has been caught, and what has been lost due to fishin in an 8in hole.

How big do lake trout get there? I have brought 10lb walleyes through 6'' and 8'' holes with no problems.

Lakers in the gorge get over 50 pounds out of a boat, I couldn't imagine one that big coming through a 10 inch hole. Speak to me big fish catchers.

I'd just go ahead and drill a clover if I were you.  I've never caught a laker over 10lbs but I know as a fisherman I'd be pretty upset if I hooked into a massive laker and could not get him above the ice.

Good luck.

I have caught several 20-25 pound lakers and pulled them through a 10" hole.  It takes patience.  The hard part is gettting their head pointed up into the hole, which gets a lot harder when the ice is really thick vs. early ice. I have seen several big fish lost at the hole when the lure hangs up on the ice at the last minute.   Once you get their head into the hole, you can grab them by the jaw and pull them through.....

I honestly don't expect to catch anything to real big, but I guess the potential is always there.  Will probably just poke around some a bit to start and if the prospects look good go ahead and make a big hole lol.  If you have ever not been paying attention and stepped in an ice hole it kinda makes ya gun shy lol.

I've brought 28 lb through an 8" hole. More likely someone will fall into your cloverleaf than you will hook a 50#er. Unless your fishing with Bonser :)
