Swivel or Line to Line?
« on: Jan 23, 2013, 03:15 PM »
What do you jiggers use? A swivel or tie the line directly to the leader?

Im putting some braided line on my jig rod right now and wanna use a flouro leader. Do you find a swivel hurts the fishing or find tying line to line works better?

I use a barrel swivel when using the big swedish pimple for big lakers. You never know how big the laker is going to be.

it depends on what you are targeting. i think line to line is better when the fish are finicky.

I prefer to use a swivel when using a lure that spins when jigged ... like a spoon (pimple / williams ice jig) or a jigging rap.

I always use a swivel. Jigging for big fish line twist can be a real pain and it will also hinder the baits action. Jigging without a swivel for pan fish it's almost inevitable you will end up with a spinning wax worm, and in my humble opinion bluegills or crappie will seldom bite on a spinning bait.
It's more important to be nice, than it is nice to be important.

I prefer a uni to unit knot. A barrel swivel just provides more areas with potential failure (2 knots, 2 eyelets to the barrel). I started out as a fly fisherman and the knots they use are centuries proven to be reliable. The uni knot is relatively new in comparison to the blood knot or nail knot but it's a similar concept and equally as reliable. go to you tube and watch some "knot wars" videos from AFC. they have some great knot ideas.

I dont use a leader or a swivle, swivles will cost you fish and take action away from your presentation, spool your reel with the line you want no need for leaders or swivles....

I use a barrel swivel with two feet of leader under it.  If you buy cheap swivels, then yes they will break about like anything else.  I buy high end 60lb barrel swivels, they are not going to break and with a good knot you will have no problems.  If you don't use a swivel then your line will become twisted and change the action of your jig and become more visible in the water.

I use swivels with a 2 foot leader. It helps keep my line from twisting bad.. but it gets annoying on the Vex..  >:(

Jig style, brand of line, quality of reel all create line twist, using quality in all 3 will eliminate 99% of twist only 1 you cant control as easily is jigs... Depending on your jig and bait choice and jigging style you will still get some at times... I run straight line reels in 45' jigging and never experience twist, a couple of my spinning reels are a pain though with spoons, 1 is poor line choice on my part other is a cheap reel the wife uses, also my fault for skimping...

I found that if you use a good quality line. you don't need a swivel. I use  fireline ice and never had a problem. I've used swivels on my tip ups and have had them break

On darters, raps, stuff that darts around a lot use a swivel 18" above the lure. Small ball bearing swivel.

On spoons, jigs, stuff like that just connect them straight and use a 24"+ leader.

I have never seen an anti twist line, I have used Maxim ultra green, fluorocarbon P-line, and other good mono lines on Penn internationals and shimano Calcutta.  Certain jigs or lures will twist the line and it is a pain.  I use the same line as my leader, I just use a swivel with 2' of the same mono below it and this works well for me.

A swivel will show on your flasher as noted above. Line twist is a function of the mechanics of a spinning reel. Every time the bail goes around it puts a turn into the line. Those turns come out when you drop the bait down the hole and cause the jig to spin.  Small diameter spools are hell for causing twisted line because every turn around the spool takes in less line.
This is one reason the new fly reel style reels are taking off in a big way.  The line lays flat and comes off the spool without any twist.

That is not true at all. Its when you reel against the drag that the line twists with a spinning reel, not every time you turn it. Lures going around, fish going around, and reeling against the drag are what cause line twists... Or if you spool up your line upside down.
