Shallow water / tip ups
« on: Jan 09, 2013, 09:49 AM »
When fishing in shallow water for trout like 4 feet and shallower, Is there a way to have the tip up so it is not so close to the bottom?  Fish aren't that dumb they have gotta see it and swim away from it. haha.2

Yes of course ;D bring cribbing and jack up those traps :roflmao:  Sorry could not resist.. Try baiting holes with salmon eggs, make your rounds to each hole looking for missing eggs, then use your best weapon...a jig pole ;) Leave the tip-ups out slighly deeper.

cut holes in the bottom of flower pots...and put the upside down so just the reel is barely in the water

troutman97, try ice rigger or artic warrior type setups with jig rods. The below link shows my new favorite the noreaster from Indian Hill. they are a little more money but they make great products.

I use Heritage tipups and 4' of water is plenty to run them. I run a short leader, 2' max.

Or you can lay it on the ice with the reel in the air above the hole, you just wont see the flag go up but it will slap the ice when it's hit.

Some tip ups have adjustable shafts that you can raise so they don't sit as deep into the water. I've also seen people use small buckets with a hole in the middle to prop them up out of the water.

You give trout way too much credit.   ;)

My pro-thermals have a short shaft anyway, so I don't usually worry about it too much.  But even while salmon fishing in Maine, the longer shaft tipups sit below the ice and that doesn't seem to bother them.

Jack Jr's! Yes they are pricey but having one or two in your arsenal is a nice touch.

I actually like my Husky tip-ups for Bow fishing. Can't be more than 15 bucks but you can adjust the height of the spool and the line comes off the spool parallel to the ice instead of perpendicular.

Too much work when a jigging rod is the simplest way to go.
I will set out a few (well withing the state limit) in rod holders, clip on a bell to the tip (or just below it) and loosen the drag.
Baited with crawlers or grubs just under the ice, you just wait for the "dinner bell" to ring and "Voila" you got trout!

Use 4 chunks of ice or piles of slush from the hole. Build up as high as you want.    @)

Ok, so dumb question from me...I have never tried salmon eggs or jigging in shallow water (jig plenty in deeper water for lakers/cusk but never tried shallow), but do the trout still go for the salmon eggs if there are no salmon in the lake?  Are the eggs just too much for the trout to ignore???

Not uncommon to catch bows/brookies in a foot of water jigging.

You can go to KTP and get the "Little Man Trap " they are pricey but you can adjust the spool; up for thin ice or down for thick ice and deep snow.

Go back to the past and use what we started with - stick tip-ups. Wood strip, set at 45%, line laid out on the ice, wire set to the flag. No need to be hi- tech. Worked then still works now!

You must be an old timer like me. LOL! I have a few of those. they work great as long as the lines don't freeze to the ice. but your right it is too hi tech. but some how we all fall in line.
