New Frabill reel and rod set combo
« on: Jan 02, 2013, 07:11 PM »
Hey ice loving friends, what would you suggest for the new reel style that looks similar to a fly fishing reel.  What type of line, I mostly fish for the perch.
Be safe out there and I appreciate your help.

OK fellas I see yu peekin at my post, I just wanted to get a little conversation going about setups for the rest of our team out there.

Santa brought me the new straight line 241.  Just want to know want type of 4lb test will best fit this reel to avoid the nasty twisting bait syndrome.  I typical use a flasher with a tungston jig.

Won't matter, that line goes on and off without twisting. The XL Smooth cast is decent stuff.

Whatever mono you decide on you'll want to back it with some braided dacron... It make for easier spooling on those new styled fly type reels...

I jumped onto the fly reel bandwagon this year. I bought a Frabill 101 straightline reel and put in on my 22" Ice Hunter Quick Tip Rod. These reels hold a lot of line so you need to back it first. I used 50 yds of 25 lb tip up line then 125 yards of 3 lb Clear Bionic Ice.

I played around with this a little last year for perch (used my fly reel), and like it enough that I picked up a Genz Ice Spooler rig the other day. Very eager to try it out. Got a 300 yd spool of 6lb fluoro coated P-Line to put on it. Looks like it will hold a butt load of line. Will tie on a lighter leader if need be but wanted to have the ability to jig fish larger than perch without changing out the line.
