Family Ice Fishing Location Suggestions
« on: Dec 24, 2012, 07:38 AM »
Greetings all,

Trying to plan a family ice fishing trip for me and my 2 sons and my brother and his 2 sons. I live in Des Moines, my brother in Lincoln. Would like to find a nice spot somewhere in northeastern or north central NE.

Neither of us has ever ice fished outside of Iowa, so I have no experience on any lakes in NE.

Would obviously need cabins or motel nearby.

Any suggested spots?

Thanks in advance.

Its maybe a bit off your path but I would strongly suggest NE South Dakota. Cant compare it with anything around here right now. Head to Bitter Lake.
Teach a kid to fish and hunt and they will be resourceful, smart and confident. Today's world is much different than the one I knew as a child. They need these skills even more than I did.

I strongly agree with Former South Dakota guy...Bitter is excellent fishing....but if you want to stay in Nebraska I would suggest Werhspan or Lake wannahoo in awhile.
Maybe a rookie at this game but willing to travel for the BITE....
Jiffy Pro4 8 in auger Clam Yukon Marcum LX 5 Muck boots. Xwife got the 4wheeler so I'm dragging it if I cant drive on the lake....

In north central Nebraska you can stay with us at the Merritt Trading Post in our cabins (2 to 4 beds each).  Call us for winter rates.  You have the option of fishing Merritt or the nearby Valentine Refuge (20 miles).  Both have excellent panfishing.  I can help you with locations and techniques.  Best of luck wherever you go!

You could try Grove lake by Royal Nebraska or Swan Lake SW of O'Neill.  Lodging in O'Neil.
Perch are holding very tight the bottom of Swan.
