Help! Sled pulling harness?
« on: Dec 07, 2012, 10:36 AM »
Were can I find a great sled pulling harness? I have been Googling and searching but I can't find one I like.  I want padded sholder straps, a chest strap and a waist strap with quick clips and a loop in the rear for a carabiner to conect to with any length rope I was for towing.
I can't find one.
I am at the point of looking at back packs I can mod.
Thanks for any help.

I actually use my old deer stand harness to pull my gear. It's the style that didn't have the leg straps, so pulling is comfortable. I also use it as my deer drag  ;)

I know. No chest strap and the lines are too short.(modify) Over Priced! looks like they added a chest strap but at that price I would want to se a padded belt.

I use an expired fall arrest harness. The safety department says its not safe for work.  Works fine for hauling a sled around

most sled harnesses are just a waist harness with poles attached to the sled for cross country skiing. for what you want google back pack frames, lots of aluminum frames with everything your looking for, you dont have to buy the whole pack

I take a piece of rope and tie the ends together to make a loop about 8 ft. long. The just put one end thru the tow rope and cross the loops across my chest. Work great.

deer drag harness. not the single strap sling. the double shoulder harness. goes for like 6 bucks. add nought rope to give you an 8 foot lead and you're good to go

Hunter Safety Systems Ultra-Lite treestand harness.  Use it during both seasons.  It's a good harness, comfortable and again can be used in the tree or on the ice.

Ditto on the deer drag thing. I also put plastic conduit over the ropes so there is no risk of getting run over on the downhill stretches.

I use a backpack has padded shoulder straps quick connect strap across the chest and also around the waist.  Its great not only do I use it to haul my shacks but also can carry added odds and ends that don't necessarily need to be in the sled ie... mittens, socks.  From someone who regularly uses fall protection harnesses I would stay away from that not exactly a quick exit.

I've always been learly of a harness.  I'm only hand pulling early and late ice for the most and if I by chance go through the last thing I want is a 100# + anchor tied to me at that point.  A long rope could handle that and keep the weight away but it would still mess with my head nonetheless.

I got the Clam harness a few years back and one of the plastic buckles broke.  I have to admit though, I was pulling a big 3 man flip over loaded with gear.  It might be fine for a 1 or 2 man shelter...

Showed my wife a pic of the clam harness, and she used an old backpack put a few clips on it with a waist buckel, works great. I use a longer rope (550 Cord) about 12 feet each side and it towes great, made a smitty sled this year so I figure it will be easier.

Don't over think this thing.............

I took 20' (or thereabouts) of 2" nylon web strap and made a loop; I had it laying around, OK? I put a snap clip/carabiner on the ends that are joined. Take another piece of strap, rope what have you and join the loop in the middle leaving oh, 18-24 inches between sides. Step inside the loop, put the top over your head across the back of your neck so the "straps" come down in front of your shoulders. Adjust the cross strap for comfort across your chest/waist. Pull your sled effortlessly.....

Super easy and cheap. If you need to slip out and get help for hills or deep snow there's plenty of pull for two pullers to grab. Not sure if this is easily visualized. Maybe I'll have to get some pics......

I also will tow sometimes with a quality internal frame backpack.

I put a much longer rope on my 2 man flip over and this is how I usually pull it. I don't have anything for a chest/waist belt, but I can see an upgrade in my future. I typically grasp the "straps" with my hands for leverage and balance.

never use a harness for the same reason. but for those that may want to use them but feel the same as i do. how about using a quick release in case you have to get disconnected fast? probably still not enough time with one but just a thought.

I just use a piece of pvc pipe about a foot long. Thread it through the rope and ues it for a hand hold.  With it being a foot long its easy to use two hands if you want.  In tough pulling I use it with both hands behind my back and just walk away.  Low tech and it works good.
