Don't have phone now but wrestling with getting a Samsung Galaxy 3, would these apps work with that phone? Do they work on the soft water as well, can you leave waypoints and such?

IDK about avionics but navoics is cool not much close to me in illinois but all kids of lakes by the hunting shack in mn $100 would be worth it!!

 :roflmao: :roflmao: :roflmao:

Where do you find an "navoics" app?

If you are going to criticize someone for their spelling errors, at least make sure your critique is spelled correctly.

I'm not gonna say that is a direct replacement for a handheld GPS unit. It's just not accurate enouvh for my tastes. But if you have $10.50 and a phone that runs Android, you will have something ALMOST as good. It will show many lakes in 1ft contours and get you dang close to where you want to start drilling. That is ten thousand times better than drilling blind in my book. My Garmin handheld unit will put me right back on the same hole I drilled a month ago.... the phone will not.

Me likey the S3. Bought the Otter Box for it too. The Navionics app for 10 dollars is a no brainer if you're in a mapped area. What can you get for 10 bucks these days? Pack of smokes? Couple jigs? McNasty meal?
The mapping in Long Island Sound lets me pinpoint any area and bring up an adjusted tide map in a waveform (pun) that i can slide through to see the times. Add a cheap GPS capable Android tablet and you can guess the rest.

YES ON THE OTTERBOX! It nearly solves the wimpy smartphones being used outside problem. I have a Droid Razr and it is cozy and safe in an Otterbox defender.

I like it because I can text with my big hands easier. The phone is skinny and slick otherwise I'd have floor bounced it by now.  Only drawback is the clear cover detracts a little from the purty Samsung display. Acceptable considering the phone will look new in 2 years.

If you are real serious about using your phone out on the ice as a GPS, I HIGHLY suggest you rig yourself up a charging port in your shanty. What you need is a 12V SLA, some wire, and a female accessory plug (the cig lighter type). Then just plug your phone's cig charger port right in and you are good to go. It will give you plenty of power for the day. Just unplug it and go looking for spots or whatever, then plug it back in when you sit down.

You just need a 12V SLA ($15-20), one of these (or similar) http://www.bikebandit.com/bikemaster-12v-15a-standard-cigarette-lighter-socket-for-power-supply?gclid=CIq7-Mqim7QCFQY5nAodSSoAag, some wire, and two clips to attach to the battery terminals.

One could also run it off of a flasher's battery if you dont plan on staying long.. or a battery for lighting system in shanty.

Guys, forgive my ingnorance on this, but when you are looking at a particular lake on navionics, how do you determine where you are going to fish?  Are you just finding the drop off's or what exactely are you looking for in the map detail that indicates it might be a good place to fish?  Thanks much in advance....

That may be the most loaded question ever asked on iceshanty....  it would take a 200 pg book for a paraphrase  answer!
