Starting first build.
« on: Dec 13, 2012, 07:51 AM »
Hey guys,

This site is AWESOME!  Me and my buddy are starting our first build. We're shooting for a 6 by 8.  Weight and $$$ are both factors, we're working with mostly scrounged, and donated materials.  My first question is has anyone used metal studs for framing the walls?  Thoughts?

Well first I must say welcome to the shanty and the addiction it is. and the mor pics you post of the process the easyer it is for us to hellp. Metal studs are good especialy if they are aluminum because they are lite and will never rust.

I have read a few threads on fishing sites about using steel studs. Some say they can cause condensation inside the walls and will transmit the cold through the walls. A lot of people recommended using spray foam insulation when using steel studs. I know no one who has used them where I live.
It seems to go from zero to hero all some have to do is lie.

Studs are fine IF they are foamed over...any airspace or air iniltration around the steel will allow condensation to form on the metal. If you aren't going to thoroughly foam, I'd use something else. Was told that from some of my construction buddies who've built them.

Welcome to the IS community JSmith22207. There is a huge information resource base here, dig around a little in older posts and you will most likely find what you need. Currently I am in the process of building a 6 X 8 as well, but mine is just one of many. Good luck and make sure to post lots of pictures, they always make good reading. :)

I've read through the first 20 or so pages of the "Ice Shack Tips"  some really great stuff in here.   The preliminary plan is frame with the aluminum studs, then 1 inch rigid insulation,  then sheath with Thermo Ply.  I'm def open to suggestions, I'll post plenty of pics as we start this thing up.
