Need advice on small home bait tank.
« on: Dec 05, 2012, 11:14 AM »
If I keep 3-4 dozen med shiners what size filter do I need? I have glass aquarium. It worked okay last year. But I want to have something a little bigger and want to keep it very simple. Was thinki g of using some kind of plastic tote or storage container instead also.  thanks guys!

Check out Ramos bait tank thread.  He did just that.   used a tote but used a pond pump and gravity filter.  You could just use a hang on the back style filter.  17gal tote, $10. 20-30gal. Whisper or tetra HOB filter $30. You be all set

I would sugest using a cooler there much stronger than the plastic totes, and once you fill it up you will see what I mean,as far as a filter goes theres lots of options out there, the gravity filter is the best bang for the buck when it comes to larger tanks and theres lots of info here to help you out, just remember one thing you need to turn your water over at least 5 times an hour,so say you have a ten gal. tank you will need a filter that will filter 50 gal per hour, and it doesnt hurt to go above that either I have a 120 gal fish tank in my house that turns the water over 12 times an hour with all the filtration I have in it and my water stays crystal clear and I only have to clean my filters every 6 months or so,Iv had some of my fish for many many years, when they do die witch isnt often its from old age

5 gal bucket should be plenty for a small tank. KISS (keep it simple st*pid). Pond pump taking the water to the top of the bucket, PVC pipe out the side down by the bottom with a $3 valve to control outflow. Lots of dollar store plastic scrubby pads for filter media, and a piece of brick or something on top to keep your scrubbies stationary. You want the water to flow through them, but you dont want them to float or move around. Then just plug it in. It is really that easy. Just use your valve to control the outflow so you have 2/3rds of the bucket full of water at all times. Of course you need to keep the bucket higher than your tank, its a gravity bio filter.

You are in it a 250gph or so pond pump, about $5 worth of scrubby pads, $5 in PVC tubing, however much flexible tubing it takes to go from your pump to the top of the bucket, and whatever your bucket costs. Oh and the brick that went missing from your wife's garden that the neighbor kids must have taken.  ;)
