New frabill tip-up
« on: Jul 24, 2012, 11:59 AM »
I was fooling around on youtube, and came across this. Interesting, but I don't think it will hold up on those bitter cold days.

Thats a pretty cool idea as long as it can hold up to the cold.

Clever idea, but if the battery dies in the cold, does the tip up still operate correctly or is does it lock up ?

Looks like it would. The battery operated part is only for line counting/depth.

I agree.  looks like it operates on a magnetic field, like many sensors on a vehicle.   The actual tip up is the same as most others, only with a magnet attached to it.

Found a couple websites that already have them listed for $39.99.  Pretty cool idea, any one know of a cheap bicycle computer that will give a total revolutions readout?
I'm a man, but I can change, If I have to, I guess.

If it holds up to the cold, it looks like it could be a very useful tool to add to the ice fisheran's arsenal.  I a looking forward to hearing field reports on this tipup.

Looks like the electronics are "isolated" from the mechanics.  Got a magnet on the spinner that gets read by the electronics (works just like the old cruise control add-ons you could buy for a car"  Put the magnet on the drive shaft and the sensor on the chassis.  Should be oblivious to the weather.  I like the idea of being able to tell how much line has been taken out.  Cool!

That's pretty cool... :)

My only concern is the readout screen. Remember how old cell phone screens would freeze? I wonder if that would do the same thing. The reviews should start pouring in come winter, I will pick one up after that.

Agreed.  Just another gimmick to catch more fishermen than fish.

Gander have them, $40.  I am glad to see new products, but many end up in garage sales in a year or two. fishing products catch more fisherman than fish, but keep em coming!

A gimmick. Guys that have a flasher should never buy this. How far it ran? All I care about is if it is still on the line and any tip up tell you that. Turning/running. Not turning for 30seconds/pull it out and do the slow pull check.

You guys remember the jigging tipups by nature vision 2yrs ago. Hmmmm I don't see them on the shelves but they caught some fisherman.

There are any number of line counters you could rig up to a tip-up.

For crank bait trolling they are nice and allow you to put your lure down to the depth that you are seeing fish or they allow you to verify the different depths you are at when you are searching for fish in a multi-rod setup.

I do not see much use on a tip-up. Like has been said you can clip on a sounder and set your tip-ups by that or use your flasher.

I use the little clip on floats to mark where the line was let out to. A button, split shot, or many other less expensive methods can be used to allow you to get back down to depth.

For that kind of money per unit I guess I am just not the target market for this.

Someone please explain what the cost of those will add to my angling experience?

I thought of that too when watching the vid. Looks very similar to the Cateye on my bike, and uses the same magnetic pulse reader.
There are cheap ones out there, but the problem is you'd have to have one that can display revolutions or feet. My Cateye works by programing the length of the front tire revolution in centimeters. Don't remember how small of a number I could enter on mine, but you're not talking a lot for the line packed on the spool (not the spool edge). Does this thing compensate for a reduction in diameter of the spool? Can you program the line you're using, as dacron will reduce the diameter faster than say, 4lb mono.

Suppose if you're on Champlain or somewhere where it's deep and you can run a zillion tipups, these will save time. Or even with trout where you need to move around through depths to find them. Maybe I'll buy one just to fiddle with it.

How will this save time? Setting a tipup you still need to establish your depth. When resetting you need to return to the same depth or change depth if desired.

I us the vexilar or depth weight at initial setup. This unit will not help with that.

Get a flag, pull in fish, checking bait... This will not help.

The only way it might help is with resetting a tipup. When setting I mark the depth with a small float. It seems to me that the simpler marking of the depth will be quicker and more efficient than the LCD display electronic version. Plus no batteries or electronics to mess with.

I fail to see the time savings versus the monetary outlay.

I like the tip up design but I think between the screen and batteries there will be some issues .  I can't wait to read the reviews.  Might be nice to try it out if the reviews are solid

I could see this being useful on some big lakes with serious depths but then again.... I enjoy the sport of ice fishing and sport (to me) means acquired skills. I was huge into archery at one time but when it got to the point of where a 10 year old could kill a deer with a compound, It kinda lost its charm.  ::)

I still go with the old style alligator clip and bell sinker for depthing......and a button to remember the initial depth.
simple and affordable.
