Utah ice season?
« on: Oct 17, 2012, 06:13 PM »
Hi everybody...I am from Indiana, but found a dream job opportunity out in Salt Lake City, Utah that im contemplating submitting my resume for. One of my first questions is what is the ice season like in Utah? What about waterfowl hunting? These outdoor activities are a major part of my life and I dont really want to give them up, even if it is for a dream job. Any information would be great. Thanks in advance!!!

Whats up icehawk, to answer the 1st ? the ice season runs from mid nov roughly at the higher elevation lakes till mid/end of march. Both ice up and ice-off just depends on how our weather is going. Usually always safe ice by christmas. Some of the local urban fisheries lock up quicker some years due to the inversion we get in this big valley. As for the duck hunting ? i think some of the other utah shanty members will answer that for you. I dont duck hunt myself. Im more of an alllllll year around fisherman  ;D dubob and icemanwoody were discussing some waterfouling in the new gear for the new year thread. Check out some of these outdoor shows and it should give you a pretty good idea on what this state has to offer and theres alot more if your just willing to get out and find it

Waterfowling can be great in Utah...lots of public marsh, most of which gets pressured pretty heavily, but still produces birds.  Most popular marshes border the Great Salt Lake, but Utah Lake marshes can produce too.  There is some opportunity for field shooting, but as always permission is the kicker there.

For a couple starting points check out:  Farmington Bay WMA, Bear River Bird Refuge, Public Shooting Grounds, etc, etc...a google search of these will likely lead you go many others!

Lol.  We liked Brownsburg but didn't look back as we left!  I still get out to Indy for work (non racing) so I get my Indy fix when needed.  Love Utah!!!

BTW Hoosier, not to bust your balls - (we technically just met); however, has anyone ever told you that you look like Todd Hoffman on Gold Rush?

Icehawk, Utah is a great place for outdoor activities! As mentioned plenty of state and federal ran waterfowl management areas for duck hunting. It will just take a little time to learn. Hopefully we get some cold weather soon! It is hard to make ice when the day time highs are in the 50's!!
