Any frozen line solution
« on: Dec 16, 2012, 03:18 PM »
Is there anything that keeps your line from freezing. Or anything that helps?    Or is -20 or so just too cold!!

Yeah -20 is cold, but some lines ice up worse than others.
What type of line are you using?
Mono or Braid?

Cant beat braid for strength and strech BUT it does hold some water more so than mono. I use braid and just deal with it

clhuff,
Yeah, I have had some luck with Nanofil line not freezing as bad.  Tip up line would have to be the vinyl line.  It holds up and won't end up in knots after hooking a fish.

I apply a line conditioner often and it does help some. Not sure about -20 though.

I've used wax after 10 feet in the past, it helps keep some of the water off, also have used dry fly spray before going out and that seems to help braid from holding water a little bit. -20 no hut, that's just cold...

I've used silicone spray on my tuf line on a spinning reel and a couple of tip ups. I think it does help but the best line antifreeze is a nice warm fishing tent or shack!!

I've done a little comparison experimenting with covered tip up holes vs open-to-air tip up holes and even the non-insulated plastic slotted covers reduce freeze over significantly. So much so that I bought a dozen Home Depot bucket lids (super cheap) and used some liquid nails adhesive to glue one inch foam to the underside and cut a slot for the tip up shaft. That bright orange really helps spot your rigs too.
~~~ Keep your powder dry and your nose to the wind~!  Even a stopped clock is right twice a day~!
Dube
Switch over to Tuf Line Duracast.
The stuff is coated braid and freezes up even less than mono!!!!
It is by far the best line I have used through the ice.
It's only isuue and a minor one is it tends to have some memory in the cold but not as bad as a lot of mono lines do.
Give the stuff a try, I think you'll like it.  ;)
