If you had
« on: Feb 16, 2005, 12:08 PM »
If you just got access to an excellent lake but could not use a quad, snowmobile, etc, and had to walk in. How far would you be willing to walk in. Would you do a 3 mile walk & how would you down size ?

Depends on the time of year ice thickness would play the major factor. If the ice was less then 2 ft id take all my stuff in a backpack and carry the hand auger in.  I would walk more then that during hunting season and my rifle weighs more then my hand auger. If that were the case and it was a real good lake then yes I would do 3 miles.

Yea, I think I would give it a go.  Hand auger, a couple tip-ups, 2 jigging poles, light on the extras, just a 5 gallon bucket to hold the equipment and sit on while there with a small sled to pull it in on along with extra clothes to put on after walk in.  Not sure I would take any fish out with me.  Now the depth of the snow is going to play a big factor on all this also, 3 miles over drifts even with snowshoes is no fun in my book and if thats the case I may have to pass on it.

I'd probably walk 10 miles return. I have a great sled that I put my power auger on and all my gear but not my portable shak.. Easily pulls with one hand. If the snow was 4 ft deep and I was going by snowshoes probably a little less.

Ya, that was my idea, some of the road in is being timbered, the rest has about a 8" of snow.

Depends how good the lake is and what species it has. It also depends on the depth of the snow. We've walked over 1 mile before in 2ft. of new snow to get to a lake before, but that's about the farthest. To fish my laker lake I have to walk about 1/3 of a mile through deep snow to get to it, and at a 10,000 feet elevation that's pretty tough!
if anybody from michigan will help me out with the lakes and stuff up here I'd really appreciate it since I'm new to the area.

in the summer i walk the beach in soft sand for a couple miles fishen for striper's.
walk the rivers and stream's for what seam miles, so walking two or three miles on ice and a little snow would just keep me in shape through winter.

I've walked over 2 miles to the middle of one of the lakes we fish on bare ice. I tried it once pulling my Ranger in 2' of snow. Note to self, "When and if I make it home I need to move the 4 wheeler up the list a few spots."  I did make it in and back, but by the time I got to my spot I was ready for a nap. I could walk forever with no snow.

If it was a good lake I would probably do 1-2 miles each way.

If the fishing was awesome and you'd be catching eight pound Walleye every other minute, I'd do the walk. That's what sleds are for no?

Sleds are out, some of the road is timbered, the rest of the way is pure virgin woods, with some heavy thickets, so a sled is definitely out.

Last season, i'd walk, and drag my ultralite shanty, loaded, thru the woods, down a hill, over a ridge, then out on the ice to the spot. It's almost a mile each way. The fishing there was great with lots of big panfish to be caught. 3 of us could catch over a hundred easily. We kept quite a few eaters but released most. We fished this area till we needed a board to get on the ice. The snow in the woods was gone and we dragged the shanties on the bare ground to get back up the ridge and thru the woods. That was serious work. Didn't do it at all this season because we never got safe ice in that spot. I would have done it again this year for fishing that good. Kept me in decent shape last year. ;D

I would do it but i would take a buddy, so between the two of us we could carry the gear and the auger.Besides you never know what might happen if you are alone. And my wife would not like the idea of me hiking in alone.DNC

Do the leaves of trees stay greener, in the autumn, does the colour of the sun, turn crimson white? Does a shadow come between us, in the winter?

Almost every time Ive gone this year its been to a pond were no motorized vehicles are allowed, and of course my honey hole is a the oposite end of the pond from where you park, I would say its about alittle over a mile walk, and with al the snow we been having recently its made that walk a work out, but got to love that. It the best spot too ,smallmouth bass 4lbs and pike 5lb+ all day long, everyday. so I never mind the walk at all, and I never have to get up real early to beat the crowd, nobody fishes this pond, got it to myslef most of the time. pretty sweet f ya ask me ;D
