So.......Who is building?
« on: Apr 16, 2012, 01:49 PM »
I know this last season has put a damper on some people that, might have been thinking of building a shanty, hut, shack, portable or shelter this spring and summer......BUT! ...................... ........                                               Who is building or modifying a hut this year?

Do shanty repairs or Modifications count ? I'm headed up to Joe dirts place to build a sloped metal roof over his woodstove bump out. I've made a new rain collar and cap for his woodstove, that will stop the dripping on the woodstove from the melting snow.

Do portables count?

One of my screws came through the sled, so I need to put a metal backing on it and reattach.

I also need to put something on it where it's pinholed. Do they sell some special spray stuff for cold weather applications?

Im still scouting up materials and weighing options for 2 new builds and 1 total reconstruction.

Hope I can do them all, but... you never know.

No building, but quite a bit of painting before it went into storage for the summer. I guess it has been hard on it to sit in the driveway for the last three seasons.  :o ;D

Im working on a new one.

Building a fully insulated 8x12' shack from scratch. Its going to have 8' walls + a peaked roof, 4x8' loft for sleeping over top of a bench seat. Floor is all treated, used 3" high density foam for the floor and sprayfoamed all the cracks. The shack will be riding on 4x6x14' skids sheeted in puckboard, I also sheeted underneath the entire floor with puckboard to help prevent freezing in. I will be using 1.5" insulation for the walls and sheeting them in dibond, I have a brand new insulated steel door and will be using tinted 1/4" lexan to make lots of big windows for high visibility.

I was planning on using a pot bellied wood stove for heat but its going to be so well insulated that I think im going to go with propane to save floor space. Other goodies will include LED lighting, 26" LCD TV, 2 burner stainless range, 12v and 120v power, comfortable seating, coffee maker and some fancy plastic work.

I started on it a few months back but ran out of time and space so I dissassembled it and its sitting in the corner of my shop against the wall. If the weather stays nice I plan on getting it outside this weekend to put the walls up and to start on the roof.

I'll pull it around with this:

I'll keep updating pictures as I go, hopefully next week I should be back on track.

Edit: walls are all framed, door and windows are ready to go but I have no pics at this time.

I'm building a shanty, I live on a lake (TGF called my lake Coo-Coo lake),   so I wont be pulling this far, if it gets too heavy I have a small Skid Steer loader that weights 2500 pounds that I can pull it with.  here is the link to its progress so far,   its an ongoing project, and I hope to have it finished for next winter.

Remodel time!  Moved the door to the other side & major window improvements!  No more "goose necking" to check my traps.  I will post pics when she's done.
