Mono leader with braided line?
« on: Mar 06, 2012, 07:50 PM »
Is there any reason that you have to use a monofilament leader when jigging with braided line?

I would like to re-spool my ling rod with fireline and I'm wondering if there is any reason you can't tie the braid directly to the lure.

Thanks for any advice you might have!  @)

The reason is that mono leader is less visible than braided line but I don't think ling care if a guy has nylon rope tied to your lure but however in my opinion I have found the problem with braided line is it absorbs water and pulls it up through the eyelets of your pole and freezes your eyelets and reel.

I tie braid to a snap swivel with a palomar knot, then attach to lure. Works great!  :)

I use flouro leaders on my braid because as said it's way less visible.
Most of the braids are bad for icing up.
The best I have found so far though is Tuff Line Duracast. It is a coated line that doesn't absorb water.
In fact it handles and works as well as mono which is great.
I use 15 and 25 pound and it gets a wee bit wirey in the cold but no worse than any mono and it's nice and thin with zero stretch.
I connect flouro or mono leaders to my braid with a back to back uni knot.

I use 30lb suffix braid to a good quality swivel then 3ft. of good quality flourocarbon in 20lb on my lake trout rigs. Works really good for big fish and the swivel eliminates the line twist associated with airplane jigs and tubes.

thanks for the comments... I just spooled my spinning reel with 20 lb fireline but there's no way there's enough line on there to fish 100 feet of water... this is interesting as the line claims to be 8lb diameter, and the spool claims it holds 90 yrds of 8 lb line which should be almost 300 feet.  ???

Haven't even tried it yet and I'm contemplating going back to mono!  ;D

Did you make sure it was a 300 yard spool of line?  ;D   :roflmao:

braid is best for deep water fishing and a little vegetable oil helps with icing up also there is no stretch with briaded line so it helps with solid hooksets at deeper lakes but be careful that your drag is set or you will rip your little fishies lips off.

LOL yes, I made sure of that :) I used it today and it worked great - turned out there was plenty of line for fishing deep.

There are a couple of problems with braided if you dont spool it right the line will free spool when it gets cold. The way to fix it is to get a fat rubber band on the inside of the spool to create traction for the braided. The braid to monofil works good but you have to make sure that the knot is small enough to go through your bail or your guide on your baitcaster, or make the leader short enough were it doesn't reach the reel. i usually use 15' of mono connected the the braided used as backing, and make sure the knot is small and tight.
