Tip up Set up
« on: Jan 30, 2012, 06:41 PM »
I want to switch my tipup set up.  I fish pike and currently use about 3 ft of Flouro off a barrel swivel from the main line.   I then use 6-8" of the Tie-able steel to a treble hook (think it a # 4).  I place a split shot about 12" from the hook.   I recently realized that my flouro is the line and not the leader material.  I'm think about switching to just flouro leader about 3'. Do you guys use any swivel to the hook or just tie the hook on the Flouro?  Also I am thinking about circle hooks.  What size hook is recommended.  Lastly is my split shot at the right distance from the hook?   when i switched to this set up two years ago i noticed more flags and hook ups as I didn't use treble hooks before.  I Fished this current set up in walleye and pike water this weekend and watched people from the right and left catching fish but I only had one flag with not luck.  Thanks for any input.

I always use a swivel!!! i have been broken off and had to replace a hook straight to ice line and believe me is no fun trying to get 200 yards of  twisted up line off of ur reel. I also stopped using the tiable leader your speaking of and jest went with a 30 lb. flurocarbon. fluro seems to have a lil more give than  mono and thats helpful with such a sporatic fish. I also found that pike are much less apt to take bait with a treble hook.  Had 4 with and four without trebles last year and only once did i catch a pike on my tip ups with treble hooks. Ice line to swivel to about 3' of mono and ul b styling my friend. just make sure ur confident in ur knots!!!  also a flyfishing company i buy from called rio makes an amazing tiable tippet bite proof material i tried this past season and absolutely loved. its a lil more pricey than wat ud get at ur local dicks or wal mart but for good reason. good luck

Thanks,  I bought 30lb flouro today as well as some 3/0 Octopus hooks that I plan on rigging up.  How far do yo put your split shot from the Hook?

sorry it took so long to reply ive been outta town. I usualy put the split shot about 6 in from the hook.  If you go much higher than that you can run into trouble with your bait not wanting to sink and it will sumtimes wrap itself around your line
