Well i put my auger together and tried it this weekend... Ended up frying the motor after 4 holes! was using 2 12v 8ah batteries. I opened it up and cleaned off the brushes and what not and got it going again when i got home, but i dont want to fry it again!  Do you think they have to much amperage?

make sure you have the batteries wired in "parallel" not "series".. sounds like you might have 24 volt..
The motor will only draw the amperage needed...

the others have been putting them in series and over volting the motor. I know this isnt good for the motor but i was wondering if less amperage on teh battery would keep the engine from frying?

Assuming the motor is designed to operate at 12 volts..., the motor will only pull so many amps.  (Unless there is a short in the motor itself).... Doesn't matter what amp rating your battery is Provided it has enough amps to operate it correctly.
I'd try hooking it up to a "full sized" 12 volt deep cycle battery and see what hapens.  Could be your batteries are not large enough ...  OR your motor isn't large enough for the work you are asking it to do...
Using 24 volt could drop down the amps....  But not sure of what it would do in the long term...
Also, try letting it cool off before drilling more holes.. Might help...

ok i think i understand what is going on here.... i have never put an 8 inch bit on mine.  the most i have done with it is my 7in that i bought brand new last year.  an 8 in hole is nice....but i don't know that the motor is meant for it.  like i said i never tried it.  i found that a 6 in worked the best for the size hole....an 8 in hole would naturally take way more torque to drill than a 6, but the amount of torque doesn't rise at an even rate...it has a curve to it much like a pump curve.  the torque needed increases expontially as you increase in size....i'm sorry but i think you over worked the motor with the 8 in bit! :-\

here is the link for the one that i bought...looks like he has a few left.

one thing i can tell you after trying it out...it does not work well with only twelve volts.  i know it says it's a 12 volt motor, but after drilling 25 holes in a row with 24 volts of power...the motor is warm, but not hot.  it's $66 for the motor, $20 for the momentary on/off/momentary on boat switch, $11 for the cutting boards, and about $10 worth of hardware to put it all together...

good luck,

matt

Hi Matt,   I know the place you bought that motor from,  the guys name is Kim,  great guy,   I bought my sawmill from him.   He has a whole bunch of different motors and engines for sale

well tell him he may be sitting on a gold mine if everyone could get these augers to work!

Motor amperage is related to the amount of load on the auger. That is why we use gear reduction devices. The heavier or greater the load the more amperage you will pull. Load and amperage are proportional. So the more amperage you are pulling will cause a reduction in voltage. This causes the windings in your motor to overheat and eventually burn up the motor.

It was pretty fun to build, but it's even more fun to see the faces of my buddies, and the people around us on the lake when they see it in operation.  Everyone always doubts me when I tell them what it will do...so I drill them a couple holes and tell them to come over and fish, and we'll talk about it.  They always want to know all about it...some even ask for pics!  Great conversation piece and an even better auger.

Dont have pictures yet (or proof), but i think i cracked the 8" auger and home made electric power head! 24v 350 watt 120 rpm...and you can get the whole assembly for free from a wheel chair service shop (i did).

Well...mine finally crapped out on me after two glorious seasons.  There Was a branch frozen midway in the ice and I stripped a gear....about 5 teeth are missing.  After a futal search for a replacement, I decided to go with a new Eskimo mako.  While I love the new auger...I still miss the speed and weight of my little homemade electric one.   Who knows, maybe one day i'll take a stab at building another one!

electric wheel chair motor auger. the prototype isnt as "put together" as i would like, but it handled 17 holes through 36" of ice using a 8" eskimo hand auger head with 3 year old blades... not much slowed this thing down. I purposefully did not clean holes half way through to show how much torque this thing has and at the same time not enough to pull it out of my hands.

What are you using for batteries?  Is it 24 or 12 volt?  It looks like it works well...but it looks like it could spin a bit faster to work better.  Nice job though!

two 12 volt batteries in series. the motor is 24 volt. I tried over volting a motor before and wont again. I agree the rpm could be a little faster, but there is no real slow down just a steady grind. It took about a second an inch.I would expect this setup to get about 30+  holes through 18" of ice
