portables with floor
« on: Feb 02, 2012, 11:26 AM »
I did some searching but came up short so here goes....
I have a clam 5600, whcih is great except for its weight. I built a snotty sled to help in moving if out on the ice with all my gear.  My problem is that if I'm not taking my kids or a friend it seems like way to much workwhen I don't need such a big shanty.  I was looking at a clam 2000 because it has a hard floor.  Yes I know the floor has its drawbacks but I could always do the mod listed on here to upgrade.  My question is if there are any other hard floored 1-3 man portables??? I'd like to stay at or below the clam 5600 weight of 85lbs.  Also I will add idrive a small 2 door VW so space is key :)

I use a Shappell S3000, carpeted floor great for 1 or 2 people I'm guessing about 35 Lbs.

my neighbor has a shappel dx3000 and its a cool thing.  i'm a big guy...6-3  350 lbs...and he and i can fish fairly comfortably with a couple buckets of gear and heater.  plus i think it only weighs 40-45 lbs.  it has windows galore and they all velcro on and off.  the thing folds down to a 4ft by 3ft square about 4 inches thick...it should fit in the trunk of almost any car!

I also have a Shappel shanty. It is the 2000 model and when going by myself it has plenty of room for me, my gear, a heater, plus some extra room too. Folds in half and shouldn't be a problem fitting it in your VW. Doors on both sides and plenty of windows too. I bought mine almost 2 years ago on clearance at Fleet Farm for $100.00 and it was not a floor model, brand new in box.

Shappell portables last the test of time. My DX3000 is about 45 lbs. They're also built here in the USA! A tough combination to find these days.

I was told the dx3000 has plastic cross beams in top while the frabill version (not sure of the model) has metal.   Any truth to that? Also the same goes for clam, it has metal cross beams

My neighbors that he bought last season has the plastic cross beams on top...but the steel tubing runs all along the inside corners... They are really only needed if its snowing.  It's a nice unit!

I have a DX3000 and love it.  It does have plastic cross beams that you can put int the top between the two poles that hold the walls up.  I've NEVER used them.  They're not needed.
