where to start

you want to fish a new body of water that u know nothing about but you have a depth map of the lake and thats it. you are fishing for perch. what is the most important thing you look at in trying to figure out where to start?

perch probally running the weed edges seeing winter never came if it did they move into the deepest basin and eat wormz in da mud thats the program get your lure in da mud with a few maggots and watch the perch goa a grubbin in da mud

look for coves and points, figure out where the bottom is and start working up the hill on the point and edges of the cove.

I like flats below the first or second drop off (depending on depth and time of year).  Also, if you have a flasher, look for where the bottom changes from rocks to soft bottom, and also, like posted earlier, weedlines.  In mid-winter, deeper flats near creek channels and points are worth checking out too.

I look for potential areas for weed beds such as coves, bays, usually 15-30 fow.

Definitely look for humps. Especially that rise up from deeper edges. Assuming your primarily fishing through the ice, let you jig.....waxies, minnows hit the bottom so it can create the mud cloud produced when worms, larvae break out.  If you can find wigglers(halgrimites) that's even better.
