Mr. Buddy Big tank conversion
« on: Jan 20, 2012, 09:56 PM »
I got a Mr. Buddy heater as i call it (I think its really a Mr. Heater Portable Buddy). My question is what do i need so i can make my heater run off big tanks like 10lb or 20lb ones instead of the small green tanks? Hose, filter, connections? Also I would like to possibly put the tank outside my shanty anyone had problems with the big tanks freezing up?

I used just the house, and set it outside my shack, worked fine, except I wasn't a fan of how little it really heated my Eskimo quickfish 3, but am going to try it with my clam Scout tomorrow
The fishing is always great, the catching however, always isn't

nope! no problem freezing the regulator is in the heater!
But I bypassed the tip over switch because my shappell 4000 if you move the floor to much it would kick it off.

Make sure to follow the directions when using the hose connected to the larger tank to shut down by shutting off tank and running hose empty.
I didn't know this and my heater is messed up now.  Some kind of oil came out of the hose from the propane.  Bad deal, Do a search about it for explanation why it happens.

They have two hoses available for the Buddy, a 6ft. and a 12ft. I believe. With either hose you are going to need to get a filter and screw it inline with your hose from the tank to your heater. I've had no problems with the bigger bulk tanks freezing up at all either here.

Yes, the filter is needed, or you will have problems in the future. The black hoses have contaminants that will foul up your heater over time if you do not use the filter.

I have the Big Buddy with the quick connect coupler and hose, a filter is not needed for this hose because the hose has a regulator on it which reduces the pressure in the hose that causes the oil that gets in the other hose with out a regulator.

A filter is needed no matter what hose you have. There are all kinds of crap in propane and without a filter you will eventually get something in the pilot office.

... or the regulator and find out that model regulator is not made anymore.  Use the filter.

filter does not fit on the quick coupler hose, the company states you do not need the filter when using that hose.

All you need to get it going is a hose kit and your ready to go.  But, as other mentioned, I recommend the filter also.  Your heater will thank you.

I have oil like fluid bubbling out of pilot light.  Maddening truly maddening when you want to use it.

Mr. Heater makes a hose just for the Buddy heaters. It,s a poly hose so that you don't get the oil containment's like a rubber hose. the literature claims no filter required. Stiff has hell, though!

I had to replace the regulator inside my Buddy heater due to contaminants from the black rubber hose.
The filter is cheaper  ::)
Get bit!

Very true.  Great hose and product specific.  Stiff it can be but will prevent the gumming.

I have a filter that I have ysed for5 years. I use it on lanterns my two burner stove and my buddy heater. Ya probably will get by without it for awhile but I bet when ya order your second heater you'll spend the $10 on a filter!!!

No.  Says so right in the description.  This is the hose that folks warn will end up really stiff when cold.  It is still a tough hose.  Has to be.  I have no experience with it.

The regulator on a portable buddy is after the hose and a rubber hose at tank pressure will leach goo.  The filter is to prevent rubber hose goo from gumming up the regulator/rest of the heater.

I have a 12ft black rubber hose.  It does stay flexible and also requires a filter.  The hose you were looking at isn't rubber specifically to eliminate the need for a filter.
