I hear many people say no spin when jigging, and have no clue what they mean.  I just started ice fishing this year and get frustrated seeing everyone else catch fish and not me.  I talk to locals and get info but when it comes to using their lures or mine on my line i still dont catch any.  I usually find the big crowd and fish with them and get pointers.  What is a simple lure/bait to use to catch gills.??? I would like a picture if at possible as to what i should get(lure/color).  Thanks in advance.

If you reel your jig up after jigging it for a while and watch it just under the water at the hole and see it spinning well then that is what it's doing down there with fish looking at it.  It seems to scare them off especially if the fish are neutral or negative.  Can combat the spin by using a quality swivel a couple feet above the jig or by jigging it in kind of a fast vibrating style which seems to keep the spin from happening.

For best viewing, get a video camera down there and see what it doing as you fish it and then also watch how the fish react.

I don't use a swivel that often when using bluegill/crappie jigs or teardrops. I do use them almost always when walleye fishing using jigging rapalas, chubby darters, and spoons like bucksots. I feel it definitely makes a significant difference in that case!

It's a fine line between fishing & sitting on the ice like an idiot

Don't use a spinning reel. I've switched over to bait casting reels or the Schooley reels. In my experience, swivels don't do much of anything to reduce line twist, especially with small ice jigs. It doesn't matter if they are ball bearing swivels or not.

A lot of guys are going to fly reels to eliminate spin (twist).

I use a tiny swivel but I use it mostly to save money...I spool my reels with 4lb add a swivel and a 2ft length of 2lb ice line...and I give the leader a good stretch every once in a while to reduce spin seems to work...give us more info bud so we can figure out why your not catchin anything...jigs? Bait? Area?...blugills tend to like weed edges near a dropoff and a popular jig to use are tungsten but pricey
