Shanty heater
« on: Feb 07, 2005, 12:29 PM »
Greetings,
Just bought my first portable shanty, Shappell 4000. Typically, how many BTU's is really needed to keep my shanty warm? I assume 3 or 4 thousand but would like some advice.

If you are using a flip style portable and fishing in temps anywhere near or below zero do yourself a favor and get the sunflower and the 5# or even an 11# tank. The buddy doesn't put out the heat at those temps and you will most likely be disappointed. I have both and will choose the sunflower over the buddy in temps below 20 every time. The sunflower has much more versitality with little or no problems with blowing out in moderate wind and will heat a flipper to a toasty warm state in a few minutes. I like tshirt weather.... ;)2

The early bird might get the worm but the second mouse will always get the cheese...

I heat my Shappel with a regular Mr. Heater (not the buddy) and most days it makes it toasty on the low setting. If it is zero or below then go to medium and if realllllllly bad go to Hi. I have a 20lb cylinder and fish every weekend all season and usually only use a half tank a season averageing 20 hours a weekend of heating.
Good thing about prisons- they reduce the potential number of fisherman on the ice!

This has to be the "MOST ASKED" question.
I think the Mr. Buddy has 4000 and 9000 BTU settings and should work fine.
Use one in my flip up Guide all the time and have never had a problem with it or with taking the chill off. I have never really checked the temp inside but I sure don't want T-shirt weather in there while I am sitting in four layers of outer clothing.
Mostly I sit it in front of me on the ground and take the tingle out of my toes or warm my hands after setting up or catching a fish.
Apparently some like it hot and I guess the larger units would be the ticket for them.
I like it just comfortable enough to sit with out gloves and I really like the portability and light weight of the Mr. Buddy. I can't even imagine dragging an extra 45 pounds, 20Lb. cylinder plus heater out on the ice with nothing but ME power doing the drag.
I am sure you will get an ear full or be directed to search back through the threads because this issue has been beaten to death with no simple answers.
If I agreed with you we would both be wrong!
