Do you prefer snow cover or no snow cover?
« on: Jan 20, 2012, 12:39 PM »
Opinion question.  It seems that there are advantages to both.  For one with no snow it is easy to see through the ice and see your fish approaching the hole as well as the depth of the ice as you are walking out as well as the fact that it makes it easier to sight fish in a dark shelter.  Obvious disadvantages are it is harder to walk/run, the wind blows your stuff across the ice, and there is nothing to pile on the edge of your shelter to keep the wind out.  So,  what would you rather fish on?

2 to 3 inches is good for me, just enogh for traction while walking out. I also think it blocks more light from getting through the ice, which gives the holes you drill a spot light effect, helping bring in the bait fish.

I prefer 3-4" of black ice. It's easy to drag gear, easy to drill holes, and it's awesome seeing the fish fight.

3-4 inches...good traction and the lighting effect
Fishing is a sport in which thinking is involved it is the covenant between nature and man, mother and son. Through fishing only can we recreate the link that has been tarnished throughout the existence of the modern era of mankind. Fishing is the answer yet people ignore it and consider it a "stupid" thing to do. What do these people do instead? They stare in front of color changing boxes. Is that life? My life is fishin

about 2 inches works, makes the drag to the lake easier on park roads or trails plus thats enough to pile around the shelter and block extra light that hurts my sight fishing

So they are calling for 6" of snow tonight and tomorrow with warmer temps next week and rain/sleet. How much do you think the snow will insulate the ice and prevent more from growing?

I'm a fan of just black ice and no snow. And if there's has to be snow no more than 1/2 " of powder. I fish in my ice skates to get to my holes faster so you can't ice skate in snow

I used to like snow covered ice because the clear ice kinda freaked me out.
Now I dislike snow covered snow

When it warms up or rains that snow turns to slush
the snow insulates the ice which usually isnt a good thing
the snow also weighs down the ice which can cause cracking

over night we had a dusting which was fine to me especially this season
that dusting would have helped me see where people walked out from shore

this upcoming snow 5-8 inches kinda sucks but, hey maybe it will protect the ice from the rain on monday =P
Next time you go to cwood let me know how many fish you didnt catch.

Usually snow cover is good for making ice. Yesbit insulates it but it traps in all the cold. It reflects the sun so not as much sun heats the water. It allows the water to make the ice and not the air

With the winter we have had so far,I would prefer no snow. we need all the ice forming we can get. If we have a good foot of ice its good to have a nice 1" of cover to make moving around a lot easier

I also enjoy seeing the fish fight thru the ice, the snow cover does seam to help the walleye bite if they
are hittin at all.
