Homemade Quick strike rigs, PROBLEMS
« on: Feb 22, 2005, 11:13 AM »
Been making quick strike rigs from a new braided line 30lb spectum I think??
Have used fire line in the past. Have had only a few break offs. This year I have had too many to discuss. I am thinking of making my own Quick strike rigs because I lie to put beads, blades and more flash to attract fish. Mostly used for pike but some walleye fishing too. Do not want to use the store bought rigs because they are too thick and have had less strikes on them and cost more. Looking to use a 20-30 steel multiple strand line and crimp off the loops after assembled.
Any help from people who make there own, let me know.
I can but the line for 16$ and crimps for 3$ and make about 30 quick strike rigs, instead of buying the assembled quick strike rigs.

Pike here in Colorado are very line shy, pressured, finicky, and often very inactive. For these reasons I use heavy fluorocarbon line, P - Line Fluorocarbon Leader Material. I have used mostly 12 pound test this year, and did have one bite off. I will probably try tying some heavier fluoro to my other tip ups.
To rig these, I just slip on one #8 gamakatsu hook and let it slide freely on the line. The other one I tie to the end of the line. I put one small split shot up above the bait, but am going to try internally weighting the bait to see if pike won't drop it as much. I also saw somewhere on here to use a sliding sinker so the pike will pull the line through the weight.
If your having luck on wire though, stick with it. Pike are capable of biting through basically anything else. Though with heavy fluorocarbon and fireline, it is difficult for them to bite through it. I have one one bite off on fluoro, and never a one on fireline. But the fireline was my leader when I was tossing rapalas and spinnerbaits during open water.

Mac use fireline for walleye and pike during the open water and love it. Have been using it for a couple of years. Do not like to use steel because of the potential for walleyes, had too many break offs from braided in the cold, wonder if the weather effects the line. Been talking to some friend who fish MUSKY exclusively in western new york and they have some mono that they swear by. 12 lb mono line would not cut the mustard where we fish even the good floro. The postivies I have heard are heavy mono 30lb or light steel sevestrand. I have also seen some posts on here about a titanium line. Don't want to break the bank for the last month of fishing. Pike closes mar 15 over here. Thanks for the info will let you know how I do this weekend.

Been useing the Fire line here in NY for big Browns for three years now. Hey, they have teeth to. Would not want my "you know what, where"!
I think the key is to change the minute you feel a flaw but to keep every thing as light as you can!
I hate steel or seven strand because the bait is the one who get the burden of dragging this crap around and they don't last long !
If I agreed with you we would both be wrong!

Agreed Pasquatch, I would rather have five fish on and they win the battles then to have no fish on and loose.
Lighten up guys, the fish who wins today gets to fight again and it is all about the fight!

The only thing that concerns me with bite offs are hooks in the mouth of pike that might take a long time to rust out and might interfere with the feeding of the fish. Still I think that on pressured water, wire isn't good. Just too unnatural.
I have used fireline during open water, the 14/6, and have never had a bite off. Fireline is difficult to cut with a sharp knife unless you put a lot of pressure on it. Most pike bite offs are when a fish inhales the lure and the leader rakes across the dozens of little sharp teeth on the roof of the mouth. Besides, walleyes and trout have sharp strong teeth as well. I have had trout bite off, but not walleyes. My brother did lose a walleye to a bite off though.

Yeah - make my own quicks strike rigs as well. Have been for many years. Originally purchased the wire from Sevenstrand(out of California I think). Now use stainless wire from local tackle shop, along with crimps and good barrel swivels. I use #6 or #8 trebles. (used to use Partridge hooks which were 2 single hooks of different sizes soldered together back to back; too expensive now, even if you can find them; real popular in UK). Run wire thru crimp, thru treble, back thru crimp, then sqeeze crimp tight. Run wire thru second treble and thru piece of shrink wrap tubing(tubing cut as long as treble shank). Then wire thru crimp, barrel swivel, crimp, and sqeeze crimp tight. Heat shrink wrap gently until it snugs up to the treble. This allows you to slide the top treble to fit the size of bait you're using. Have used these to take many large pike here in Manitoba during the open and hard water seasons.

Hope this helps.

You are the man! I couldn't think of an easy way to retard the sliding hook....shring wrap tude for wireing BRILLIANT!!!!! thanks for the tip, can't belive I didn't think of that.
