God lots of ways to attack this....

You mean Saturday...you'll be scouting for good ice..so that on the 3rd Saturday in January you will be set to fish for lakers/salmon?

No info, just some advice.  Trout season doesn't the third saturday in January, and if you go onto closed trout waters and are caught, your season will probably end rather quickly.
Silly rookies, traps are for animals!!  Tilts are for kids!!  Fishermen use tip ups!

No fishing for trout salmon or bass until the 3rd Saturday in January. Champlain would be the exception to that. Better check out the regs at the F & G website. www.vtfishandwildlife. com They have a lot of info on what species are in every lake. Stocking lists and such. Rescue and Echo are close to Springfield and are open for trout when the season opens. Not all trout waters are open in the winter consult the list before venturing out.

All of the trout waters that open on 1/21 are prime locations. Check the stocking report on VT F&W site
if you want to target salmon as  many of the lakes are not stocked with Salmon. Champlain has
quality and improving LLS fishery as state has been poisoning the lamprey streams.

I like Caspian Lake for the trout, not much for salmon though. It's a tough lake to get around on because it's usually got a couple feet of snow on it. It's in Greensboro Vt. easy to find and good parking lot. Lot's of smaller trout but every year someone gets one that's huge. good luck!
