I am trying to find Surf's post about using pvc trim from Cheapo Depot... that saved me easily $70 today. Something about pvc trim boards he ripped, I imagine a 1x4 trim which is a nom 3-1/2 giving him 32 feet of runner 1-5/8 each for $30. That's what I'm gonna do this weekend. Hopefully he'll see this thread, having trouble finding it though. I was ready to order some hyfax from my snowmobile dealer for $20 each, I have the XL sled and was hoping to do all 5 ribs for $100. I'll keep searching.

Ya, I priced out UHMW from a local supplier and it was nearly $100, I guess not.
This was the best deal I could find,

Well, I'll post what I come with at The Home Dump. Stay tuned. Hopefully less than $40 to do all 5 ribs on my XL with hardware. You have access to a table saw?

holy cow. I got enough to do two glide lites and an otter sled with some left over and I paid 50bucks at a local place. 1/2inch thick UHMW. I bought a sheet that was big enough for what I was doing and cut it myself on my table saw.

Here is a link to US plastics. they sell UHMW square stock (get the 1/2 by 1/2 and dont even need to cut it except for lenght) for 1.49 a foot.

Hey Doc, The pvc trim is on its second season of machine towing and good for another 2 years ! Way too many reports of the hyfax kits getting nuked in one season for the money that they ask for them !

go to your local powersports shop / mechanic that work on snowmobiles.  I got some old take off snowmobile hyfax that fit PERFECT in the grooves on my otter sled.  used countersunk 1/4 stainless machine screws to secure, cut to length= PERFECT  it will take YEARS to wear through them, and when they do  who cares replace with more freebies

My brother gave me a set of Shappell Sled Wear Bars for christmas, installed them this week. Seems like they should last for a few years unless you do a lot of pulling on pavement. The hardware was a bit short on my Jet Sled XL, had to buy a box of screws 1/4" longer.

Do any of you guys seal the holes you drill through the sled? Or just screw it down and hope no moisture gets up in the sled.

I bought 3 12" pieces of 1-1/2" by 5/8 PVC trim today. Got a box of truss screws. Got the heat gun out and going to town tonight. Gonna have to take a break for maple glaze ribs in the crock pot and Patriots Football action.

I melted wax into the countersunk holes and never had a leak, even in the slush we had last year !

The Shappell wear bars are reversible, if they do wear, simply rotate ends.

I only have one counter sunk hole in the very front of the runner. The rest of the screws are pancake head truss screws that are only 9/16ths and do not go all the way through. I guess I'll see if it leaks, and then maybe paint that rubber tool dip stuff on the top of the screws.
