Marcum LX7 vs Lx 5
« on: Jan 02, 2012, 12:16 AM »
Anyone running the new marcum lx 7 ? How
Do you feel it compares with Lx 5. Is it worth spending the extra 200 bucks for all those extra features even though there is some glitches or issues with the unit? Wanna get my hands on a flasher and having issues deciding which to go for and especially due to some of the mixed reviews on the Lx 7

Any feedback would be appreciated

Even if there aren't any bugs, I'd stay away from the 7 for a season or two just to make sure.  Digital things can be really finicky.  I bought a showdown when they first came out and ended up returning it.  I wouldn't be as hesitant to buy one now that they've cleaned them up.

With that said though, the LX-5 has been out for quite some time, and is pretty much the cream of the crop when it comes to traditional motorized flashers.  I upgraded from a VX-1P to an LX-5 this season, and haven't regretted it one bit.  It's more flasher than I'll ever need.

I also talked to the guys at Marcum when the LX-7 was first being released because I had the same question as you.  However, I was also concerned about how the lcd display would hold up in Saskatchewan cold (not central US cold).  He said they had only tested it down to -20 and that much colder than that might slow down the display a bit (even if it's heated, that was a bit of a red flag for me).  Also, if it got dropped and some digital component broke, $700 is a pretty hefty replacement bill.  Personally I'd stick to the 5, but I'm sure others would disagree.  If you're in S'toon you can always come try out my 5 sometime if you'd like. Shoot me a pm.

I picked up an LX7 for a buddy of mine over the holidays as there were no more humminbird ice 55s for sale and I must say that im impressed. We sat in the shack together yesterday and I got to play with all the features and all I can say is wow, this is definitely a game changer. While I wouldnt run out and sell my humminbird just yet I would however consider this for my next purchase, I like the idea of mechanical flashers more than digitial but this thing works really well. We fished out of the shack all day and it used 15-20% of the battery roughly(no heater on) so I think it would be able to handle a day outside with no issues. Its very big, lacks a decent handle, and I cant believe they kept that stupid plastic arm but overall I think its really cool.

Good luck finding one though I believe they pretty much sold out the day they came out, ordering online would be your best bet for this year.

Thanks guys, tough choice but I love the applicability of the lx7 as a summer sonar aswell so it's definitely a tough choice. Jpicks, I have just recently used a buddies Lx 5 and was amazed. This however was my first experience with a flasher unit and have now been looking at all the options available. As for availability, wholesale sports had like 10 units today in Saskatoon alone, not sure on elsewhere
