Ice question
« on: Dec 12, 2011, 09:19 PM »
I will be in PA, close to lake wallenpaupack, like 5 miles away or so for new years weekend. Do you guys usually have ice by that time on that lake or lakes near by?  I know its been warm lately, at least in NY, but i was curious when do lakes usually ice up in that region.
Thanks

if were lucky the coves might be iced up on the PAC but more then likely it Will not be iced over at that time with the weather we are having.  ALL this coming week there will be highs in the low to mid 40s at the lake.

some of the smaller lakes in the area and some of the lakes in northern Wayne county and higher elevations maybe good to go.  if er get some cold.

Tobyhanna may be good by new years if you get really desperate and don't mind shallow lakes with turds and mud for bottom.

Just saw the extended forecast for western part of the state and possible highs in the low 50's come Christmas.  Just this evening on the national news they said it is suppose to be warmer and drier this winter, La Nina stricks  again.

the last time they said that we set a few record days for cold....I remember it being -17 one day and -21 the next  ;D    Not to mention we had 2 feet of ice in the Poconos that year

YEAH NOT LOOKING GOOD FOR NEW YEARS, USUALLY TOBYHANNA ONE OF THE FIRST TO FREEZE UP, SHALLOW WATER, THE PACK NO WAY TO DEEP, MAYBE SOME OF THE COVES BY THE 1ST WEEK IN JAN. NOT A PLACE YOU WANT TO BE THE FIRST TO TRY IF YOU'RE NOT FAMILIAR WITH THE EARLY ICE THERE. SHOHOLA USUALLY FREEZES EARLY ALSO, ABOUT 16 MILES EAST OF THE PACK, LOTSA WEEDS THOUGH ESPECIALLY IN LOWER 2/3 OF LAKE.

That's a decent forecast if you already have ice but you need a lid on the ponds and lakes to make ice; otherwise a little wind and sun will quickly remove it. Let's hope (pray) for some still nights!

Sorry: I usually have already looked at the seven day, and should have before I posted. :P Sr73087, you left out some vital info: lows of 19 and 20, and highs in the 30's for the next couple nights leading into the temps you showed. Providing it isn't too windy, and doesn't rain, that might just get the ball (or sled) rolling at those elevations. Last New Year's Day was good for me if I recall, and I was in the aforementioned region. Happy holidays, and best wishes for lots of fishes!

Just be smart fellas..........no daredevils !!!

I was fishing a few years ago on skinny ice.........and 2 fellers showed up and tried to fish in a cove with some water coming into it........I said the ice is skinny and not safe.......they didn't listen and the one guy went  for a swim.....he really freaked out........I got him calmed down and talked him out of his predicament..........s cary, because his buddy almost made it 2 dudes in the drink.............

the ice will come.............we just have to wait a little longer...........norma lly, by Christmas the ice is 3.5 to 4 inches around me........not so this year..........

I'm in Berks County...........no ice fishing on Christmas this year...............

I drove by lake Ariel Tuesday and it was white caps with the wind  I'm assuming it was the same yesterday.  I was thinking that it might be stretch to get on this weekend on any water in the area that is of any size.  if you know any body that has ponds or small lakes you might be able to get on by third.  It is supposed to really cold starting on Monday all through Thursday.

Arrived to lake ariel yesterday night, checked the ice,  coves have 1 inch by the shore, middle of lake is open.
Since an inch is not enough to walk on, i didnt fish. Ohh well.
