Thats a great deal. Do yourself a favor and if thats a used battery, go buy a new one, with a charger. Disregard this info if you are confident in the battery and have a charger. You won't be disapointed and I also agree with starting with the gain on the lowest setting neccesarry.

General rule of thumb on the gain is 1 number per 10 ft of depth, but keep in mind that is general guideline.  Like others have said, scale the gain back so you can just see your jig no matter what depth you are fishing.

i have never used a vex. but i have a marcum showdown and i really like it. it is better than wondering around the lake just guessing where to fish

Thanks...I can tell one of the batteries is probably shot. won't take a charge. I have a little automatic charger for small sealed batteries and it hasn't read a full charge in almost 24hrs. Ill be buying a set off EBay or Gander or somewhere. May need a different charger too. Always have a charged battery and a spare.....   

oh yea, I found a 9mah battery with same dimensions as the 7mah. I used it on my HumminBird Portable which was later stolen. The battery was only like $15 shipped with a 2year warranty and USA Seller/Shipper I wonder if it will work the Vex. I know it would last longer than the 7maH. But I could go anywhere from 10-24 volts on the LCD. It did work good. But I realize that it will be powering a motor vs a LCD screen.

The 9ah battery will work just fine on the vex as long as it is a 12volts.

One of the big C outdoor gear stores sells a pack of two 12V batteries and a charger pretty cheap. About $40 and they are 8Ah.

Not me - I put grandpa Ledger Yoder's Free mason ring on(secret power) - pick up my green willow branch as locator.
Watch & listen where they've not been biting - that is usually the next hot spot.

I've got the exact same one.  I don't need all of the newer bells and whistles on some of the higher end models.  You will never want to leave home without it.  You will see an increase in the amount of fish you catch.

I also ordered a new battery.... one of the 2 that came with it didn't hold a charge. Better safe than sorry.
May get to use it sooner than I expected.
