coffe can heater
« on: Nov 13, 2011, 10:10 AM »
I am just getting into ice fishing this year and have been looking for some heater ideas.  I was looking at some pictures on here a few days ago and saw a little heater made out of a few metal coffee cans but i cant remember where it was.  I think it was in one of the many "lets see your sled" sections.  I liked the idea and was thinking of making one similar to it.  Does anyone remeber seeing this picture?
Also how does the MR.buddy heaters work?  Are they worth the money and about how long do they last on one of the small propane bottles.
Thanks for the help

if you have candle wax or melt a candle over your tp it will last a lot longer.  The wax makes a big difference.  very easy to do as well

I've  saw a quart paint can, with charcoal used as fuel, then hung inside a gallon paint can. Basicly a hand-warmer. It wasn't used inside a shanty though.

if you are in a shanty, I have used a tea light candle in a small folgers can ( also a great idea for inside a coffin blind when goose hunting )
outside the shanty I would say a buddy heater if the wind isnt blowing

Another good way to do this is to use a Coleman gas lantern. Everyone that has one know's how much heat they put out. First I took a nail and punched 4 hole's around the open end of the can. It's necessary to do this so the lantern can continue getting air! Then turn the can over and set the open end on the top of the Coleman lantern. Doesn't work the greatest on real windy day's. You might be surprised on how much heat this bad boy will put out! DIRTBALL2 ;)

Thanks guys for the quick resposes.  Right now I dont have any kind of shanty since I just started to gather what I need for ice fishing, I am probably going to get one before I go though.  I was thinking of using it more for an outdoor kind of heater/handwarmer.

if your looking for just a hand warmer try eastman outdoors glove hand warmers they last up to 10 hrs and about the same price as TP but doesn't have the dual function, and they produce no fumes ,catch them on sale 2 for a buck i by them by the box for the season helps with the arthritis on really cold days

saw a guy with a can heater in a 5 gallon bkt. he cut a slot in front and had some pvc pipe hooked to the back.when he sat, the pipe went up the back of his jacket, and the slot heated his hands in front.don't know how it worked, but always thought of trying to make one.

My trick is a one lb metal coffee can with a can of safe heat six hour 9.4 oz in the
bottom of a five gal pail or by itself. Good for warming hands.

Inside my 5 gallon bucket that I sit on, I put a metal bowl with a sterno from the dollar store.  My seat/bucket top is a half moon padded seat that allows the heat to pass up between my legs and up my jacket.  I simply hold my hands over the opening to warm them while jigging.

The metal bowl keeps the sterno centered so it doesn't melt the bucket sides.  Simple and cheap.
