OK to Sandblast My Auger??
« on: Oct 28, 2011, 04:53 PM »
I have an older Jiffy 30 that has alot of chipped off paint and is starting to rust. I removed the powerhead and the blade. I was planning on taking it to work and sandblasting it to remove the old paint then repainting it. Do you guys think it would be ok or would the blasting warp it or possibly ruin it? I don't know much about sandblasting.

I've blasted antique thin Model T fenders, you should be good to go, what blast media are you using ?

Blasting on flat thin surfaces can cause warpage, the auger flight should be strong enough to keep from warping. good luck on your re-finish job.

Thanks for the reply guys, I'm going to give it a shot. I'm not sure what the media is since my job doesn't involve the blaster.

Some companies involved in casting use very aggresive media or even shot peening which you may want to stay away from. Another suggestion is to look into powdercoating. Getting cheaper to have done and much more durable.

Ground walnut shells work nice and won't heat like a silica media.

mote if you have a hand blaster there it would be OK. if it is a big cabinet that they do rail road castings or whatever in i don't think you would want to. as a millwright i use to replace the panels on them and in a couple days they would do a lot of damage to 1 inch steel. at least if it looks to bad you probably wouldn't have to worry about the hoodlums wanting it.

It's a small cabinet probably 5' square. We use it to clean  the heat shields in our funaces( we do vacuum heat treating). The media looks like really fine sand to me.

the guy doing the blasting there will know whether or not if that blaster will work, if he doesn't he shouldn't be running it !

sand blasting would be awesome!  i would recommend rattle can primer and then color....maybe clear coat over that too if you wanted overkill.  i'm not a fan of powdercoating....stuff always peels.
