Jiffy Carb
« on: Jan 28, 2011, 06:16 PM »
Hey,

I got a Jiffy Stealth STX for christmas. It has the Tecumseh engine.

Anyway, I've only used it 3 times but its never run great. It seems that it will only operate under load when at half choke. I can't turn the choke off without it stalling. Even at half choke it bogs down on me. I've maybe drilled 20 holes.

Anyway, when it cuts ice its incredibly fast. Does anyone else have this issue? I think its the high speed screw in the carb but I'm not sure. I can't tinker with it because its got those red things in the screws. Can you take them out? What should I do.

Thanks.

Yes you can pop off the red cap, open it up another 1/4 turn counterclockwise.  Once running, the machine should not require choke at all.

You are referring to the high speed screw right? or both?

Thanks for the advice!

The high speed one, should be the bigger of the two.  Those plastic caps are there to get people to avoid monkeying with preset carburaters, one of those California things

HMMM, I'll have to go out and check mine.  I have the 2hp Pro with the Tecumseh engine and did not see any screws or caps so I figured it was fixed jet.  I don't think I missed anything.

Yep if you have a 2hp Jiffy STX the carburetor is not going to have any high or low end screws to adjust.

Looks like I may have to investigate the carb # and see if I can find the same one with needles.

my  2hp. jiffy stx tecum. would idle fine but would bog down when drilling..same problem..no adjustment..somebody on ice shanty said to try higher octane gas..went from 87 to 92.. it help it a lot..still bogs some but a lot better.. mine had not drill over 30 holes since I bought it new..used hand or drill attactment..

This thread might be useful:

Definitely helpful for those with adjustable carb models.  I found a replacement carb for my non adjustable 2HP jiffy for $23.95.  A Tecumseh repair kit is $17.70

I figure I'll order a carb, a main jet and a few main jet sealing plugs and start to play a bit with slowly enlarging the main jet size.  Might save me from buying a different auger...

Fisherman1 you're the man!

Gave it a quarter turn and it ran like a champ [in the garage.] I'll keep the screw driver with me on the ice tomorrow but I let it run for a while so she should be good to go.

On a side note it freaked my neighbors right up when I fired that thing up. So loud they practically dove in the snowbank! City folks for ya haha.
