Question from a newbie
« on: Feb 08, 2011, 09:10 AM »
I'm new to ice fishing. I went out yesterday and found the conditions to consist of snow, followed by slush, followed by water. After drilling my hole, the area filled with water. I shoveled out the water from the area and it filled back up with water. Is this normal or is it just due to all of the snow we have? What will it take to make the conditions fishable? Thanks!

It's fishable, just not ideal. When you shovel for tipups leave the bottom 5" of snow. Just walk on top of the mess. This weekend I packed my trap lines with a snowmobile when I first arrived, worked well in all but one 50' section. It was already wet when I got there. Later in the day snow was settling some. I would think snow shoes would help alot if on foot.

The weight of the snow is pushing down on the ice causing the water to come up out of the hole.  don't shovel the snow away from your hole, just pack it down then drill your hole and set your tipup on top of the packed snow.  As far as what it will take to get rid of the slush, well a thaw and refreeze is the only thing that will help.

Tested a few spots on northern Champlain had the same conditions. Looks fine to bring the old man out on tomorrow, definitely need snowshoes.   ;D I hope you hunt that little brown dog. Ice fishing helps piss the wife off between duck and spring snow goose seasons.
